Spanky’s Quest

Spanky's Quest

Game: Spanky’s Quest
Start Date: September 6th, 2016
End Date: September 15th, 2016

Growing up with the SNES meant that I was often in a “renting games” phase with that system, and I have definitely rented some really cool and interesting games through this method. I feel like with renting, you are more inclined to check out a game that you probably wouldn’t just purchase if you saw it at a store, and Spanky’s Quest was definitely a game like that for me. In this game, a monkey named Spanky is trapped in an evil witch’s dungeon of….dangerous fruit enemies…and Spanky has to bounce his way out of dodge and defeat the witch once and for all.

As I said, this was a game I rented a lot as a kid, but I was never able to find the game in stores. Then, after going to a Game Xchange store near where I live, I saw this game in the display case for a mere 10 dollars. Feeling nostalgic, I picked up the game and I’m very glad I did! Because this was going to make for an interesting mini-project to go alongside Ocarina of Time!

Kirby’s Avalanche

Kirby's Avalanche

Game: Kirby’s Avalanche
Start Date: January 31st, 2015
Videos: 4

Kirby has had a number of spinoff games, and one of the very early ones was a Kirby redesign of the game Puyo Puyo. This game was called Kirby’s Avalanche, a Tetris-styled puzzle game that can actually get quite difficult in some of the more difficult settings. Let’s get moving Kirby!

I hadn’t done a proper mini-project for awhile and since I was kind of getting too far ahead with some of my uploads, I figured a short project of this nature was in order to hold things over for a small bit. Kirby’s Avalanche came to mind as a game I played when I was a kid and from that point on, I knew it was the way to go.

Super Mario Kart

Super Mario Kart

Game: Super Mario Kart
Start Date: August 24th, 2013
Runtime: 2:41 hours
Videos: 10

What happens when you take a racing game and fill it with all kinds of Mario characters and items? You get a recipe for absolute chaos! The Mario Kart series is known for being one of the most addictive Mario spin-offs you can ever find and this is a statement that was still true even for its first installment.

As much as I love the Mario Party series, I was running out of Mario Party games to play on my channel. As a result, I decided to go to another spin-off to get my fix. Mario Kart is a series I’ve been playing since my youth, even being the owner of the very first Mario Kart game which I played religiously with my father. Although I can’t promise any narrow-margin victories like we’ve seen in Mario Party, this race does get extremely intense!

Kirby’s Dream Land 3

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Game: Kirby’s Dream Land 3
Start Date: August 12th, 2013
Runtime: 4 hours

Dark matter, the same icky stuff from Kirby’s Dream Land 2, has made its return, but this is not something our hero Kirby will be able to stand for. With new abilities and new animal friends, our hero is ready to once again save the day from almost certain doom!

This was the tenth “replay” project I did on my channel, as I had done some videos for the game at a prior date, but due to the poorer quality of the project, I decided to redo the project with a modern spin. The videos for the old project are still available for viewing on my channel, but there is no longer a playlist associated with that version.

Once again, I was dissatisfied with the original rendition of a project I had done and I wanted to do it over again and do it right. This time was Kirby’s Dream Land 3, a game that I originally played “blind” for you guys, but I was unhappy with the result as it gave a very unprofessional balance of “blind playthrough with post-commentary.” With the final result of this project, I will say that I was glad that I redid this project, although I will say that I wasn’t a huge fan of it either; my distate mostly stemming from the fact that I am not a big fan of this game, as I found out.

The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse

Who would have thought that Capcom, the minds behind Street Fighter and Mega Man, would actually enter the realm of Disney in their video games? Well, truth be told, back in the day, this was Capcom’s bread and butter, making tons of video games based on popular Disney movies and characters. In this game, Pluto has been kidnapped by mighty Emperor Pete and it’s up to Mickey to save his pal, entering a world of danger, magic, and lots of other perilous things.

This was a game that I played very briefly in my youth, being able to rent it from the video store downtown. It was a game that I remembered very well though, so much that I wanted to play it for you guys. It’s been a long time since I have touched this game, but I was more than looking forward to it.

Super Metroid

Super Metroid

Game: Super Metroid
Start Date: November 27th, 2012
Runtime: 3:41 hours
Videos: 10

The legacy of Samus Aran has always been a fan favorite, and her second adventure to the Planet Zebes is a cult classic among Metroid fans. Upon leaving the Ceres Space Station, after the events of Metroid II, Samus gets a distress call from the station, returning to find it completely lifeless. She finds that the space pirates (from Metroid I) are responsible, and she returns to Zebes to set things straight.

Metroid was one of the few Nintendo series I had left on my radar and I figured it was time to tread these new waters with a bang from a fully-charged Charge Beam. I went with my favorite game of the series, as it was the one I remember most and have the most fun playing, and I felt like it was a great one to start with, and end the year with!

Super Bomberman 5

Super Bomberman 5

Game: Super Bomberman 5

Runtime: 5 hours

A new evil face, by the name of Emperor Terrorin, has released a bunch of bad bombers on the universe and they are now causing havoc across Bomberman’s homeworld. It’s time to revisit some classic locations from the past four Bomberman games and save the universe from this new foe.

Although I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the Super Bomberman games past the 2nd installment, I did want to cover the entire SNES series for you guys and this was the only game in my way of a full completion. This game was an interesting one to go through, mainly due to all of the twists and turns that exist in this game, and not to mention loads and loads of backtracking, but I did manage to finish all of the levels and complete the game fully.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie’s Double Trouble

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble

Game: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie’s Double Trouble
Start Date: June 5th, 2012
Runtime: 5 hours

If capturing Donkey Kong wasn’t enough, it seems like Diddy Kong has also gone missing, which means that it is Dixie’s turn to figure out what the heck is going on in the world of Donkey Kong Country. This time she is joined up by her cousin Kiddy Kong who has some unique abilities of his own (although for the most part, he is just a copy of Donkey Kong). The duo will have to search places like Kremwood Forest, Mekanos, and Razor Ridge to find their friends!

To close off this SNES trilogy, I bring you DKC3! Although it’s not my favorite of the trilogy, I still have very fond memories of playing this game with my friends, and like the two installments that came before it, it’s filled to the brim with excellent platforming gameplay, some very intriguing puzzle elements, and the general monkey madness that ensues from any game with the Donkey Kong label.

Super Bomberman 4

The main villain of Super Bomberman 3 is back to once again cause some more mischief, and this time, the entire fabric of time and space is at risk! Although Bomberman is not a timelord, he still knows a thing or two about stopping bad guys, particularly with explosive results!

I had already ventured into the territory of playing games not released in North America with the 3rd installment of the Super Bomberman series, but with SB4, we’re now getting into Japan-exclusive content here! There isn’t a whole lot to say about this game…I don’t feel like it achieved anything too spectacular…really just being another addition to bomb-exploding mayhem that is the Bomberman series. If that’s your thing, step right up and have a “walk through walls” power-up!

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Game: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Start Date: November 28th, 2011
Runtime: 14 hours

It’s another normal day in the Mushroom Kingdom when Bowser decides to once again try his luck at capturing the princess. Although his attempt is once again a failure, Mario’s rescue of the princess gets interrupted by a new enemy, one who plans to destroy this world and replace it with a world filled with weapons! Mario will have to go to some new places and meet some new faces in his first full-fledged RPG title.

This was the eighth “replay” project I did on my channel, as I had done some videos for the game at a prior date, but due to the poorer quality of the project, I decided to redo the project with a modern spin. The videos for the old project are still available for viewing on my channel, but there is no longer a playlist associated with that version.

Although my replay projects were generally met with positive feedback, this was the first one where I felt I had more mixed results, mostly due to how overplayed this game is. Despite this fact, this is one of my all-time favorite SNES games and my attitude towards the original project was too low for my personal standards, which gave me enough of a reason to redo the project. At the end of the day, I was satisfied with the redo, and I think that is all that matters in the long run, and I hope you guys enjoy the videos as well!
