It’s time for the next generation of Mario Kart, and this generation has handgliders and undersea driving…how adventurous! This installment of the game was released on the 3DS and became, easily, one of the 3DS’s biggest multiplayer and online games at the time! It’s time for another good-old fashioned race!

Mario Kart 7 was definitely a game I wanted to get done this year at some point, and since there was a convenient weekend project opening at the tail end of summer, it seemed like a good as time as any to get things moving here and get one step closer to being done/caught up with the Mario Kart series. I also feel like this is the first time I’ve been closer to finishing off the Mario Kart series than the Mario Party series. But anyway, back to what matters, another stroll through Mario Kart as I take a gander at all the grand prix cups on 150cc and Expert, look at some of the other modes that are available, and even take a few sessions of the game online for some fun and excitement!

Nintendo got on a bit of a retro-kick during the late Wii and early Wii U era, releasing many games that went back to their roots and the New Super Mario Bros. games were the most obvious candidates of that. New Super Mario Bros. 2 was the third of four NSMB titles, and is perhaps the game that gets the most flak for this type of mindset. It doesn’t change the formula very much at all and adds millions and millions of coins to compensate for it. There’s also another story of Bowser kidnapping the princess somewhere in there, but Mario might be too busy collecting coins to notice it. Oh well, at least it’s another Mario game, right?

This was pretty much the last New Super Mario Bros. game I needed to cover before being done with the series. I might go back to the Wii U and cover New Super Luigi U at some point, but as far as the main four, this was really just a matter of taking care of loose ends. I’m admittedly looking more forward to getting to the Mario 3D games, which can only mean that Super Mario 3D Land should be on the horizon at some point soon! Until then though, hope you enjoy another Mario playthrough. With all my teasing aside, I do think this is a very good playthrough and I did have a bit of fun going back to this game because I didn’t remember much of it.

Ever since Hudsonsoft went out of business, people could make the argument that the Mario Party series started going down a very dark road. However, that didn’t stop Nintendo from continuing the series by any means necessary, even if they didn’t exactly understand what fans of the series actually wanted from a Mario Party game. Instead, they decided to take the Wii Party approach by making a bunch of minigames and doing a variety of one-off boards to feature those minigames; with no single, strict board gameplay to speak of. How did this approach pay off? Well…not a lot of people like this game, but it did manage to sell enough copies to make it as a Nintendo Selects title, so…that’s something, right?

Honestly, it’s still incredibly early for me to make a final statement on this game. I got it for free with a gift card sometime last year and haven’t had a lot of personal experience with it myself. However, from what little I have played of it, I didn’t necessarily hate the game. I just wish it would have delivered on more of what I liked as opposed to delivering on half-baked concepts that only scratched fractions of the Mario Party itch I’ve had for the last several years now. With that being said though, it is still a Mario Party game, which means I had to cover it at some point, so why not now? The year is young, lol.

First we got Super Mario RPG, then we got Paper Mario, but in 2013, Alpha Dream had another idea when it decided to give us another Mario RPG, but this time on the Game Boy Advance. Little did we know, this was the start of a very well-established handheld franchise with great gameplay, a refreshing sense of humor, and some extremely memorable moments to come! So let’s take the series back to its roots and explore the Bean Bean Kingdom for all the laughs it has in store!

I was definitely not ready to continue with the Paper Mario series, knowing what title was next on the agenda, so I decided to mix it up a bit and start tackling the Mario & Luigi series, essentially giving me some more time to breathe before Sticker Star, and a title that is easily way more fun and interesting to me. Before Fire Emblem came out to America (finally) this game was easily my favorite title on the Game Boy Advance, and it’s not exactly hard to see why. So let’s take it all in, shall we?

Since Mario started his 3D platforming adventures, he tried to stick to a “one 3D platformer per system” type of format. However, after the success of Super Mario Galaxy, it’s no surprise that Nintendo tried to get a sequel in the works, bringing a 2nd Galaxy game into the mix on the Wii console. Bowser is at his tricks again in his takeover of the universe, and it’s up to Mario and lumas to stop him!

After how successful the Galaxy 1 playthrough was, I was looking forward to getting to Galaxy 2. Although I prefer the original installment, there were still plenty of things I liked about this game too, and after not playing it in years, I was very much looking forward to returning to this title.

The Mushroom Kingdom is once again greeted by a new foe, and this one hopes to destroy the very fabric of all worlds and dimensions. Mario must once again save the day in an all-new adventure that will literally take him to places where he has never been before. But first, what has happened to Peach, Bowser and his brother Luigi?

“The mighty has fallen,” is a phrase you hear a lot when referring to the Paper Mario series. While most consider that falling point to be Sticker Star, there are some who believe this game’s departure from the traditional Paper Mario experience to be the beginning of the end. I for one do not agree with this logic as this game definitely features some charm and intriguing gameplay to boot, so I was looking forward to seeing this game in action again.

Mario Party Adance wasn’t exactly the Mario Party game people were looking for when it came to a Mario Party handheld experience. However, when the DS was doing some really nice things with Mario games, attempting the true Mario Party formula with this new hardware was a really great idea becasue Mario Party DS is the definitive Mario Party handheld experience. It’s a little rough around the edges and this game does introduce the tradition of capable Mario Party games not featuring online play, but I think this game is really good and in fact better than some of the console games.

SlimKirby, when will you do Mario Party DS? This was the question I got nonstop for many, many years. Heck, I wish I knew the answer myself, but this was a long road of uncertainy for me. With me giving my old capture card away as a gift to someone who really wanted a DS and no idea of when I would get a new one, this project was in jeopardy. However, once I received my capture card via donations, I knew this had to be one of the first projects I did, so I made sure Mario Party DS was on the agenda. Now I am proudly happy to present Mario Party DS Board Playthroughs!

Mario Kart always seems to be a staple of every Nintendo system, and Mario Kart DS was the answer for Nintendo’s newest (at the time) DS handheld. Although the two screens and touch screen functionality were kind of the main draw for the handheld, Mario Kart DS was a game that didn’t really try to use those features as a crutch for its design. The second screen was used as a map, which was kind of nice, but for the most part, Nintendo just tried to push the same solid racing gameplay that had been present in all the games prior. In addition to that, the DS system also incorporated Nintendo’s newest Wifi Connection which allowed people to finally play this multiplayer beast of a series online, which was a huge draw for the game and system during its initial run. Although it’s my least favorite game of Mario Kart’s modern era, I can’t deny or ignore the impact that this game had on the rest of the series.

I was going back and forth for what game I wanted to cover first now that I had my new 3DS Capture card; Mario Kart DS or Mario Party DS. I knew there was a bigger desire for Mario Party DS, but I felt more comfortable with this as my first project with the new capture card, so I decided to go for it and hold off on Mario Party DS for one final delay (it is coming though). This project will feature several videos of Grand Prix Mode, the Mission Mode, and some other modes I feel like covering as well.

Spanky’s Quest

Growing up with the SNES meant that I was often in a “renting games” phase with that system, and I have definitely rented some really cool and interesting games through this method. I feel like with renting, you are more inclined to check out a game that you probably wouldn’t just purchase if you saw it at a store, and Spanky’s Quest was definitely a game like that for me. In this game, a monkey named Spanky is trapped in an evil witch’s dungeon of….dangerous fruit enemies…and Spanky has to bounce his way out of dodge and defeat the witch once and for all.

As I said, this was a game I rented a lot as a kid, but I was never able to find the game in stores. Then, after going to a Game Xchange store near where I live, I saw this game in the display case for a mere 10 dollars. Feeling nostalgic, I picked up the game and I’m very glad I did! Because this was going to make for an interesting mini-project to go alongside Ocarina of Time!

Super Mario Galaxy

With every Nintendo platform having a very early Mario title, it’s no surprise that within one year of the Wii’s release, Super Mario Galaxy graced our presences with a game that was….quite literally…out of this world! Taking a 3D Mario platformer like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Sunshine and turning it into a spherical 3D platformer seemed kinda odd at first, but it turns out it was a very smooth transition considering. Now we have one of the greatest Mario games of all time, if not just one of the greatest games of all time.

I think it’s no secret I love Super Mario Galaxy, considering I love many Mario games in general, and truth be told, I was heavily considering this game for a very long time. But as usual, the timing never really felt right, especially considering at the time I hadn’t done Super Mario 64 or Sunshine yet. However, I wanted to make sure Galaxy was done this year in 2016. And sure enough, I was able to make it work.
