The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

It’s time to set sail for the next Zelda game; this one on the Nintendo Gamecube! Although it was quite a graphical departure from what a lot of people were expecting, many Zelda fans opened their hearts to this colorful and cute installment of the Zelda series. A great evil is brewing across the Great Sea and a lone boy on the island of Outset is gearing up to take it on. Is this boy the legendary hero? We’ll have to wait and see.

Although I was technically hoping to get Zelda 1’s second quest taken care of before this game, I knew for sure that this summer was going to be the time to finally take on Wind Waker, so I decided to move it a little ahead in the schedule. There’s not much to say about this game aside from the fact that it’s amazing! The world is amazing, the sailing is amazing, the combat system is amazing…this game is quite the legendary adventure, I must say, and I look forward to showing you guys every moment!

Sonic Adventure 2

Sonic Adventure 2

Game: Sonic Adventure 2

After the events of Sonic Adventure 1, Dr. Eggman is up to his classic, villainous plots again, but this time he has snuck into a military base and released a black hedgehog from captivity; Shadow. With Shadow on his side, Eggman has a super fast hedgehog of his own and now has a plan that will wreck the entire planet if Sonic doesn’t stop him. However…we now get a choice of which side we want to work on. Will we join Sonic to save the world? Or will we join the Eggman Empire and try to conquer it?

I wanted to get Sonic Adventure 2 started last year, but I just didn’t have enough time to get it going, so I waited until the beginning of 2019 instead. This game is perhaps one of my favorite games of all time, just because the sheer amount of time I’ve put into it and number of times I’ve gotten all 180 emblems. So now, it is my pleasure to bring to you guys as a Let’s Play.

Like Sonic Adventure 1, my ultimate plan for this game is to play through the game normally for Youtube, and then after I’ve finished it, I will do all the emblem grinding and acquiring on my Twitch channel, after which I will upload pieces of that footage to Youtube as well. This will be a long playthrough because of that, but I’m looking forward to it!

Mario Party: Star Rush

Game: Mario Party: Star Rush
Start Date: January 5th, 2019
End Date: March 17th, 2019

Mario Party was starting to get stuck in a funk, at least as far as faithful, die-hard fans were concerned and Nintendo didn’t really seem to have any interest in going back to the roots of what made Mario Party such hit in the first place. However, when they decided to change things up, remove the car-based gameplay, and try something new with some elements from Mario Party of old…even fans like myself, who were losing hope and interest, took notice of this new change. Say hello to Mario Party: Star Rush!

I was really happy that both Mario Party 10 and Island Tour were over with at this point, because now I could start focusing on some games where I at least had some positivity to share with people, and my first impressions of Star Rush were generally very positive. I don’t think I would take it over a majority of the original 8 installments, but it was a pretty interesting take on the Mario Party gameplay and I applaud the effort that Nintendo decided to take with this one.

Mario Kart 7

It’s time for the next generation of Mario Kart, and this generation has handgliders and undersea driving…how adventurous! This installment of the game was released on the 3DS and became, easily, one of the 3DS’s biggest multiplayer and online games at the time! It’s time for another good-old fashioned race!

Mario Kart 7 was definitely a game I wanted to get done this year at some point, and since there was a convenient weekend project opening at the tail end of summer, it seemed like a good as time as any to get things moving here and get one step closer to being done/caught up with the Mario Kart series. I also feel like this is the first time I’ve been closer to finishing off the Mario Kart series than the Mario Party series. But anyway, back to what matters, another stroll through Mario Kart as I take a gander at all the grand prix cups on 150cc and Expert, look at some of the other modes that are available, and even take a few sessions of the game online for some fun and excitement!

Although this project is completed, I may return in the future with some more online sessions before the Mario Kart 8 project!

New Super Mario Bros. 2

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Nintendo got on a bit of a retro-kick during the late Wii and early Wii U era, releasing many games that went back to their roots and the New Super Mario Bros. games were the most obvious candidates of that. New Super Mario Bros. 2 was the third of four NSMB titles, and is perhaps the game that gets the most flak for this type of mindset. It doesn’t change the formula very much at all and adds millions and millions of coins to compensate for it. There’s also another story of Bowser kidnapping the princess somewhere in there, but Mario might be too busy collecting coins to notice it. Oh well, at least it’s another Mario game, right?

This was pretty much the last New Super Mario Bros. game I needed to cover before being done with the series. I might go back to the Wii U and cover New Super Luigi U at some point, but as far as the main four, this was really just a matter of taking care of loose ends. I’m admittedly looking more forward to getting to the Mario 3D games, which can only mean that Super Mario 3D Land should be on the horizon at some point soon! Until then though, hope you enjoy another Mario playthrough. With all my teasing aside, I do think this is a very good playthrough and I did have a bit of fun going back to this game because I didn’t remember much of it.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

This game has been a long-time coming, for a number of reasons. Not only have I wanted this Let’s Play to happen for many years now, but it also speaks a lot for American gamers back in the early 2000s when Super Smash Bros. Melee came out and when Marth and Roy were finally introduced to North American gamers who had no idea where they came from. This brought Fire Emblem into the limelight, and a few years later, Intelligent Systems finally graced International audiences with the first worldwide released game of the series. This adventure follows the heroes of Eliwood, Hector and Lyn on their quest to save their land from an oncoming evil, in turn-based strategy game goodness!

As I said before, I can’t even begin to tell you guys how long I’ve been waiting to do this game. This is my favorite Fire Emblem game of all-time, one of my favorite video games of all-time, and after looking at the list of games I had not done for the channel yet, I knew that I couldn’t go another year without having this game covered. Because of this, I finally decided it was time to jump into action and get this beast of a project beginning! Let’s save Elibe everyone!

NES Remix 2

There’s not much to say when sequels of games like these come out. Developers liked the formula they came up with, so they decide to make a sequel with some more content and new idea (although, more towards the former in this case). Nintendo has some more NES games to make challenges with and we are going to see what the 2nd collection of this is going to bring out!

I wasn’t quite ready for more Mario Kart or Wario Ware, or god forbid, another Mario Party game, so a return to NES Remix seemed to be on the table this time! We got some great games in this collection and I’m not just saying that because Kirby’s Adventure is a main feature. We also have my favorite NES game of all-time, Super Mario Bros. 3! We have my favorite block-dropping puzzle game of all time, Dr. Mario. And we also have…Wario’s Woods? Interesting…

Donkey Kong Land 2

After the success of Donkey Kong Country 2, it’s no surprise that Rare wanted to keep capitalizing on their successful franchise by putting variations of the game on the Game Boy…despite how strange Donkey Kong Land was by itself. For this game however, Rare spent a little more time emulating Donkey Kong Country 2, down to the very same level names and gimmicks that made the game known. How does this hold up compared to it’s console counterpart?

I needed another short project to bridge the gap between my first two big projects of the year, so once again, I decided to take a trip back to the Game Boy. I told you this was going to be the year of handhelds. I was definitely looking forward to this one though, just because it was the best of the DKL trilogy, from what I remember of it. However…is that really saying much? Let’s find out…

Mega Man II

Mega Man II

Dr. Wily never knows when to quit…and neither did Capcom back when Mega Man was at his peak in popularity. Every year, at least for awhile anyway, Capcom would grant a release on NES and a release on Game Boy, making sure the Mega Man madness would never quit and so gamers could have a new game on each particular platform. However, knowing how incredible Mega Man 2 was for its fans, how did the Game Boy version of this sequel take off? I think it’s time we try to discover that answer.

I admittedly wanted something short to work on in between projects, and since I’ve been trying to cover all the handheld ground for game series I’ve covered on console platforms, and because there is a lot of Mega Man to sort through, I decided to attack this game; Mega Man II for the Game Boy. I remember enjoying this game when I played it for Retro Achievements, but at the same time, I also know that this game is a bit of a sore subject for die-hard Mega Man fans. After finishing the game, I can understand why, but at the very least, this is a game I could recommend for newbies to the series, who might find the NES installments to have too high of a difficulty curve.

Mario Party: Island Tour

Ever since Hudsonsoft went out of business, people could make the argument that the Mario Party series started going down a very dark road. However, that didn’t stop Nintendo from continuing the series by any means necessary, even if they didn’t exactly understand what fans of the series actually wanted from a Mario Party game. Instead, they decided to take the Wii Party approach by making a bunch of minigames and doing a variety of one-off boards to feature those minigames; with no single, strict board gameplay to speak of. How did this approach pay off? Well…not a lot of people like this game, but it did manage to sell enough copies to make it as a Nintendo Selects title, so…that’s something, right?

Honestly, it’s still incredibly early for me to make a final statement on this game. I got it for free with a gift card sometime last year and haven’t had a lot of personal experience with it myself. However, from what little I have played of it, I didn’t necessarily hate the game. I just wish it would have delivered on more of what I liked as opposed to delivering on half-baked concepts that only scratched fractions of the Mario Party itch I’ve had for the last several years now. With that being said though, it is still a Mario Party game, which means I had to cover it at some point, so why not now? The year is young, lol.
