Pokémon Snap

Pokémon Snap

Game: Pokémon Snap

Back in the late 90s, the Pokemon craze was going wild, and while the video games were doing excellently, it’s no surprise that a bunch of spin-offs were made for the series as well. One of these spin-offs was not about capturing or battling with Pokemon, but taking pictures of Pokemon.

At the end of my Generation 2 playthrough, I mentioned wanting to do some of the spin-off games before I started Generation 3 and I knew Pokemon Snap was one I could get done very quickly in between projects. Although I wasn’t sure when I wanted to start the NES Marathon yet, I knew that if I put the playthrough in July, I could get it done quickly and casually finish up Super Mario Galaxy by itself for the rest of the month if I wanted to do the marathon in August. That’s pretty much what I decided to do.

Diddy Kong Racing

Diddy Kong Racing

Game: Diddy Kong Racing
Start Date: February 10th, 2015

Diddy Kong was one of Rareware’s finest creations and on the Nintendo 64, he featured in a pretty sweet racing game that was pretty darn close to topping the Mario Kart giant that had become the king of racing games at the time. It’s time to collect some bananas and balloons and memorize those silver coin locations, because it is Diddy Kong Racing time.

Diddy Kong Racing was a game I had in mind for awhile at this point, but I didn’t want this game to be looked at as another weekend racing project, seeing how I had just completed Mario Kart: Super Circuit a few weeks prior. I held off a small bit, but at a certain point, my nostalgia just couldn’t handle it anymore as I drove back into this gem of a racing game.

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros.

Game: Super Smash Bros.
Start Date: May 24th, 2014
Runtime: 4 hours

Back in the old days, one of gamers’ greatest fantasies was the thought of combining all of Nintendo’s mascot characters and putting them into a game where they could just go wild and fight each other. It was Super Smash Bros., a game developed by Masahiro Sakurai, the developer of Kirby, that finally accomplished this feat and had a tremendous legacy that developed alongside it.

I still had not figured out how to tackle Mario Party DS yet and I was definitely not ready for Mario Kart: Super Circuit either, so I decided to focus on another spin-off game instead. With all the hype surrounding the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4, it seemed like the best time to go back to the Smash Bros. roots and start celebrating the hype in a proper way! I also decided to incorporate “#SmashHype” as a way for my viewers to contribute to the hype of the new games and promote even more discussion.

Banjo-Tooie

Banjo-Tooie

Game: Banjo Tooie
Start Date: March 10th, 2014
Runtime: 13 hours

Gruntilda the Witch had met with a very unfortunate end after the events of Banjo-Kazooie, being trapped under a boulder in the ground. However, after two years of being trapped under Banjo and Kaoozie’s victory, Grunty breaks free and is out for revenge, and will do everything necessary to make sure she wins again! Banjo and Kazooie will have to extend to greater heights to beat the witch this time, learning new moves, exploring new areas, and possibly splitting up to achieve greater success.

I really enjoyed the Banjo-Kazooie playthrough from last year and was very much looking forward to starting this LP as soon as possible. It wasn’t until 2014 that I could get this going, but whenever you start a playthrough of a really good Rareware game, expect to hit the ground running and taking it all the way to the end!

Mario Kart 64

Mario Kart 64

Game: Mario Kart 64
Start Date: February 1st, 2014
Runtime: 2:09 hours

Mario and his friends sure love to have a good race, and after the success of Super Mario Kart on the SNES, Nintendo was happy to keep the engines going on their next console. Mario Kart 64 brought some new and really innovative tracks and reworked a classic arcade racer into a multiplayer fun-fest. I hope you guys are ready to race, because lakitu is about to wave that checkered flag.

Although Super Mario Kart was my entrance into the Mario Kart series, I feel like this title is what completely sealed myself into loving it. Because of this, how could I not do it? Now if you will excuse me, I think Princess Peach just threw a red shell at me and now I need to knock her off the Wario Stadium jump.

Paper Mario

Paper Mario

Game: Paper Mario
Start Date: November 19th, 2013
Runtime: 17 hours

During one of Princess Peach’s parties, Bowser once again comes knocking at her door, but this time with a very nasty surprise. It seems he has stolen the Star Rod and has gained the power of the Stars, finally able to topple his old rival Mario. However, there is still hope in this world, and Mario may just have what it takes to put Bowser to rest.

Paper Mario is hands down one of my all-time favorite Nintendo 64 games, and I knew at some point I was going to cover this game. After a bit of time had passed, that time eventually came and I was ready to tackle the beast known only as Paper Mario. I even took this project a step further and decided to cover all of the optional sidequests and item pick-ups!

Pokémon Stadium

Pokémon Stadium

Game: Pokémon Stadium
Start Date: August 26th, 2013
Runtime: 6 hours

The Pokémon craze was going strong in the late 90s and because of it, Nintendo found it necessary to create as many Pokémon games as possible to capitalize on this phenomenon. One of the games was Pokémon Sadium, a 3D Battler where you can take all of the original 151 Pokemon and battle them against each other. This game also capitalized on the N64 Transfer pack, which allowed you to transfer your Pokémon from the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions of the game and wreck the competition with them on a whole new platform.

This playthrough, much like the game itself (which capitalized on the Pokémon craze of the late 90s), was capitalizing on the success of my Pokémon Blue Let’s Play, taking my main team and bringing them into the world of Pokémon Stadium to take on the toughest opponents of the N64 generation. Although I wouldn’t say this LP was as successful as the Blue LP, it was still a lot of fun to do. I also made a comeback to this game in 2017 when I played through the rest of Round 1 with Rental Pokemon and may come back even later with even more teams for Round 2 rounds!

Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64

Game: Super Mario 64
Start Date: January 13th, 2013
Runtime: 5 hours

Mario has been on lots of adventures, but Super Mario 64 was the first adventure to take Mario in a 3D environment. Princess Peach has invited Mario over for a slice of cake, but when he arrives at the castle, he finds that things are not as they seem. The Princess has once again been captured, in her own castle no less, and Mario must rescue her, while also restoring the power of the stars to the castle. By doing this, Mario will not only save the day, but might still get that piece of cake!

Super Mario 64 was a game I was kind of worried about at first, mainly due to the sheer amount of people who have done a playthrough of the game on Youtube already, but thankfully it’s a game anyone can get into, no matter how many times you play it or watch it. This game is definitely a legendary title of the Mario series and its influence has been widespread throughout the ages.

Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls

Iggy's Reckin' Balls

Game: Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls
Start Date: October 16th, 2012
Runtime: 7 hours

The Nintendo 64 was home to some really strange, but addictive, video games, and one of the strangest around might be Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls. What happens when you take a bunch of ball-like characters, put them in a platforming-racing game, and just let things run wild? The result…nothing but pure insanity!

This was another “weird” one that I had in my collection, but I was really interested in playing it for you guys because there was a point in time where I became obsessed over this game during my youth. Overall, even I admit that it was a very weird game to LP, and not to mention that I probably should have played it along with a game that wasn’t Adventures of Lolo 3, but it was a very interesting playthrough and I did, surprisingly, have a lot of fun with it.

Mischief Makers

Mischief Makers

Game: Mischief Makers
Start Date: July 25th, 2011
Runtime: 4 hours
Videos: 14

The Nintendo 64 was home to some very unique and whacky games, one of which being Mischief Makers. This is the story of how a butt-kicking fembot named Marina goes to the Planet Clancer and finds that things aren’t as they seem. And now Marina will have to grab and toss her enemies, use a variety of weapons, and maybe even shake this world upside-down to figure out what is going on.

This was another game that I discovered through a friend (the same friend who introduced me to Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon), and it was another one of those games that had a really unique and interesting charm to it, so much that I couldn’t resist to not do a playthrough of it. Getting all the gold gems is tough, but it’s definitely worth it to see all the humor this game has to offer.
