Mario Kart DS

Mario Kart DS

Mario Kart always seems to be a staple of every Nintendo system, and Mario Kart DS was the answer for Nintendo’s newest (at the time) DS handheld. Although the two screens and touch screen functionality were kind of the main draw for the handheld, Mario Kart DS was a game that didn’t really try to use those features as a crutch for its design. The second screen was used as a map, which was kind of nice, but for the most part, Nintendo just tried to push the same solid racing gameplay that had been present in all the games prior. In addition to that, the DS system also incorporated Nintendo’s newest Wifi Connection which allowed people to finally play this multiplayer beast of a series online, which was a huge draw for the game and system during its initial run. Although it’s my least favorite game of Mario Kart’s modern era, I can’t deny or ignore the impact that this game had on the rest of the series.

I was going back and forth for what game I wanted to cover first now that I had my new 3DS Capture card; Mario Kart DS or Mario Party DS. I knew there was a bigger desire for Mario Party DS, but I felt more comfortable with this as my first project with the new capture card, so I decided to go for it and hold off on Mario Party DS for one final delay (it is coming though). This project will feature several videos of Grand Prix Mode, the Mission Mode, and some other modes I feel like covering as well.

Fortune Street

Fortune Street

Game: Fortune Street
Start Date: November 28th, 2012
Runtime: 48 hours

Everyone sure loves a game of Mario Party, but what happens when you remove the mini-games and replace them with stocks, properties, investments, and everything economics, and add a bunch of Dragon Quest characters? My friends, it’s time to take you on an adventure; an adventure called Fortune Street!

When I first heard of Fortune Street, I wondered if it would be a nice continuation of the huge Mario Party following that was featured on my channel. However, when I started playing the game, I was very quickly surprised to find something much different, and much more challenging. I was thrown off from ever wanting to do a project of the game, but here I was…one year later…ready to pick up the Wiimote and try it anyway. Not only was it long endeavor, needing a large break in between both halves of the project, but it definitely had its entertaining moments as well. If you are ready to see the action that Fortune Street has to show, grab a dice block, sit down, and enjoy yourself!

Super Mario Land

Super Mario Land

Game: Super Mario Land
Start Date: February 12th, 2012
Runtime: 35 minutes
Videos: 2

An evil extraterrestrial villain named Tatanga has invaded Princess Daisy’s kingdom and it’s up to Mario to save her and her people in his first handheld adventure. Watch out for exploding koopa shells, and use Mario’s new Superball ability in this classic, nostalgic adventure!

This was another short platformer I wanted to cover for a weekend mini-project (much like Kirby’s Dream Land) and it was short enough to last a single day! Once again, there isn’t a whole lot to say about this, as I mainly wanted to cover it so I had the entire Super Mario Land series under my belt (although I had plans to redo Super Mario Land 3, later that year), but if you are in the mood for a playthrough of a very nostalgic game, let this one be your pick!

Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3

Runtime: 3:41 hours

So we had the game that started it all, and the two games involved in the sequel controversy, but now we have the one that everyone remembers! Super Mario Bros. 3 was a phenomenal success for gamers living in the NES era, with the inclusion of such classic levels, power-ups, enemies, and some of the best 2D platforming you will ever find in gaming history! Can you bring Mario all the way to World 8 and rescue the princess again? You better hit that start button and find out!

This is a project done in conjunction with three other games as part of the Super Mario All-Stars Let’s Play. I had just finished Radiant Dawn at this point and wanted to take it easy before I got back into any major games, so I figured a run-through all of the classic NES Mario games was in order!

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins

Game: Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Start Date: July 27th, 2009
Runtime: 1:36 hours

After the defeat of Tatanga in Super Mario Land, Mario returns home to find that his castle has been taken over by an imposter named Wario. Wario has sealed the front door shut, and the only way to open the door will require Mario to adventure through the neighboring zones to find the six golden coins that will break the spell and open the door. In this all new portable adventure, Mario will venture into space, glide through the sky with his new “flying rabbit” power-up, and even go exploring in the mouth of a giant turtle; anything to regain his lost home.

This was the second “replay” project I did on my channel, as I had done some videos for the game at a prior date, but due to the bad (camcorder) quality of the project, with no commentary to boot, I decided to redo the project with a modern spin. The older videos are no longer available on my channel.

This was the first Game Boy title I owned for the Game Boy, and much like Super Mario World, this game has a lot of nostalgic value for me and is definitely one of my favorites. It’s not a very long game, but is definitely worth a quick watch if you are interested in one of Mario’s most classic handheld adventures.
