Mario Kart 7

Mario Kart 7

Game: Mario Kart 7
Start Date: September 1st, 2018
End Date: —

It’s time for the next generation of Mario Kart, and this generation has handgliders and undersea driving…how adventurous! This installment of the game was released on the 3DS and became, easily, one of the 3DS’s biggest multiplayer and online games at the time! It’s time for another good-old fashioned race!

Mario Kart 7 was definitely a game I wanted to get done this year at some point, and since there was a convenient weekend project opening at the tail end of summer, it seemed like a good as time as any to get things moving here and get one step closer to being done/caught up with the Mario Kart series. I also feel like this is the first time I’ve been closer to finishing off the Mario Kart series than the Mario Party series. But anyway, back to what matters, another stroll through Mario Kart as I take a gander at all the grand prix cups on 150cc and Expert, look at some of the other modes that are available, and even take a few sessions of the game online for some fun and excitement!

Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros.

Game: Super Smash Bros.
Start Date: May 24th, 2014
Runtime: 4 hours

Back in the old days, one of gamers’ greatest fantasies was the thought of combining all of Nintendo’s mascot characters and putting them into a game where they could just go wild and fight each other. It was Super Smash Bros., a game developed by Masahiro Sakurai, the developer of Kirby, that finally accomplished this feat and had a tremendous legacy that developed alongside it.

I still had not figured out how to tackle Mario Party DS yet and I was definitely not ready for Mario Kart: Super Circuit either, so I decided to focus on another spin-off game instead. With all the hype surrounding the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4, it seemed like the best time to go back to the Smash Bros. roots and start celebrating the hype in a proper way! I also decided to incorporate “#SmashHype” as a way for my viewers to contribute to the hype of the new games and promote even more discussion.

Mario Party Advance

Mario Party Advance

Game: Mario Party Advance
Start Date: March 2nd, 2014
Runtime: 6 hours

Mario Party had been a clear success on consoles, but after awhile, the developers at Hudsonsoft wanted to take the series and move it on to the Game Boy Advance, which had been a huge financial success at the time. The results were quite…different, to say the least. Anyway, Shroom City has been attacked by Bowser and he has taken all of the world’s minigames and “gaddgets.” It’s up to Mario and his three closest friends to help solve the troubles of Shroom City.

With all of the console Mario Parties being completed at this point, I knew that at some time I would need to take a trip to the handheld games, and after almost a year of no Mario Party action on the channel, I decided to give Mario Party Advance a try. Although it’s very different from the traditional Mario Party formula, even moreso than Mario Party 9, it does have its own charm and I wanted to share it with you guys.

Mario Party 9

Mario Party 9

You can’t keep a good Mario spin-off down, and when Mario Party started vanishing off the face of the Earth, here comes Mario Party 9 to remind us that the party isn’t over yet. Mario Party 9 was the first Mario Party game in four years (after the eighth game) and with it’s return, brought a number of changes to the formula. Many fans questioned these changes, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty, the fun and mayhem of Mario Party is still quite in existence.

This project was a long-time coming, as many people expected this game to come to my channel in 2012, but due to my large commitment of taking on Fortune Street, I decided to use this game as a buffer in between the two halves of the Fortune Street project. This was a decision that was really rewarding and created, very easily, the biggest high point of my channel in quite awhile.

Pac-Man Party

Pac-Man Party

Game: Pac-Man Party
Start Date: May 6th, 2012

Mario is known for his crazy parties, but what happens when another iconic video game character decides to throw a party of his own? Some of you might be saying “Sonic Shuffle” or “Crash Bash,” but what if we go back even earlier than those characters? What about Pac-Man? Well, you are in luck, because to celebrate his 30th birthday, Namco would like to introduce, Pac-Man Party!

Despite the teaser at the beginning (where I teased that this would be a Mario Party 9 playthrough), I knew I wanted to play this game for you guys when I first received the game as a Christmas present in 2011. Although it might seem to be another half-baked take on the Mario Party franchise, I do feel that Pac-Man Party does have some very good production values and does have a charm of its own. I don’t think it’s a perfect game (and it could use a variety of improvements), but it’s really fun for what it is and has some creative ideas.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Game: Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Start Date: April 2nd, 2012
Runtime: 9 hours

Kirby is having another leisurely stroll through Dream Land when he finds a nice, juicy tomato to eat. Turns out, eating this tomato was a bad idea, as an evil sorcerer named Yin-Yarn turns Kirby into a piece of yarn himself and sends him to a place called Patch Land. In Patch Land, he meets Prince Fluff, his guide to this new world made of yarn! Although Kirby no longer has his trademark abilities anymore, he will find that yarn isn’t so useless. It can quite literally be the key to threading this new adventure together!

Around the tme of this project, Kirby’s Epic Yarn had gotten a lot of hate from gamers, particularly those who either found the game “insultingly easy” or a bad title to represent the Kirby series with. I personally disagree with all of those sentiments as I thought this game was amazing in its own right and charm. Not only did I find the gameplay fun, but the game itself is a masterpiece in audiovisual excellence. I had also gotten a lot of requests to cover this game as well, which I was more than obliged to follow through with. All in all, I think this is a terrific game and I hope you guys enjoy it as well!

Super Bomberman 4

Super Bomberman 4

The main villain of Super Bomberman 3 is back to once again cause some more mischief, and this time, the entire fabric of time and space is at risk! Although Bomberman is not a timelord, he still knows a thing or two about stopping bad guys, particularly with explosive results!

I had already ventured into the territory of playing games not released in North America with the 3rd installment of the Super Bomberman series, but with SB4, we’re now getting into Japan-exclusive content here! There isn’t a whole lot to say about this game…I don’t feel like it achieved anything too spectacular…really just being another addition to bomb-exploding mayhem that is the Bomberman series. If that’s your thing, step right up and have a “walk through walls” power-up!

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Dark Matter is once again on the loose, and it’s up to Kirby and his friends to make things right and banish the evil sludge back to where it came from. In order to accomplish this, Kirby must travel to several other planets and use some very new and unique powers, including a new mechanic of combining copy abilities!

I was smack dab in the middle of my Radiant Dawn playthrough at the time and wanted to make sure that I had a decent buffer in between the mass quantities of videos I was uploading for the Radiant Dawn project. I turned to Kirby, particularly my 2nd favorite Kirby game, for a bit of assistance, because everybody loves that Kirby guy! I do feel like this playthrough got kind of drowned out by Radiant Dawn, which is a shame because I thought this honestly went pretty well considering.

Remember the Five Dastardly Bombers from Super Bomberman 2? Well if not, they are back, but this time under the control of a new, evil mastermind! It looks like once again, Bomberman will need to save Planet Bomber from another intergalactic invasion!

This was actually the first game I played on my channel that had no American release, forcing me to play the European version. Bomberman is known for being a very repetitive gameplay series, and the 3rd installment of the SNES series is no stranger to that stereotype, with nearly all levels being a typical, “destroy all enemies, activate all switches” objective, and unlike the first two games, I never found this game to be particularly engaging, or as engaging. However, I did want to follow-up the first two playthroughs with the rest of the series, and this is my take on the third game.

The Star Carnival is in town, and MC Ballyhoo is the host for the festivities. Mario Party is all the rage, and Bowser just might be up to something as well. It’s another stroll down Mario Party lane and this game’s gimmick features the use of Nintendo’s Wii-Motion functionality!

While not much time had passed between my last Mario Party playthrough and this one, I figured it was time to get back into the Mario Party groove to start the year off right! It was quite interesting, making the move from Gamecube partying to Wii partying, but the spirit of Mario Party remained with us as we went along the journey!
