Mario Party was starting to get stuck in a funk, at least as far as faithful, die-hard fans were concerned and Nintendo didn’t really seem to have any interest in going back to the roots of what made Mario Party such hit in the first place. However, when they decided to change things up, remove the car-based gameplay, and try something new with some elements from Mario Party of old…even fans like myself, who were losing hope and interest, took notice of this new change. Say hello to Mario Party: Star Rush!

I was really happy that both Mario Party 10 and Island Tour were over with at this point, because now I could start focusing on some games where I at least had some positivity to share with people, and my first impressions of Star Rush were generally very positive. I don’t think I would take it over a majority of the original 8 installments, but it was a pretty interesting take on the Mario Party gameplay and I applaud the effort that Nintendo decided to take with this one.

Ever since Hudsonsoft went out of business, people could make the argument that the Mario Party series started going down a very dark road. However, that didn’t stop Nintendo from continuing the series by any means necessary, even if they didn’t exactly understand what fans of the series actually wanted from a Mario Party game. Instead, they decided to take the Wii Party approach by making a bunch of minigames and doing a variety of one-off boards to feature those minigames; with no single, strict board gameplay to speak of. How did this approach pay off? Well…not a lot of people like this game, but it did manage to sell enough copies to make it as a Nintendo Selects title, so…that’s something, right?

Honestly, it’s still incredibly early for me to make a final statement on this game. I got it for free with a gift card sometime last year and haven’t had a lot of personal experience with it myself. However, from what little I have played of it, I didn’t necessarily hate the game. I just wish it would have delivered on more of what I liked as opposed to delivering on half-baked concepts that only scratched fractions of the Mario Party itch I’ve had for the last several years now. With that being said though, it is still a Mario Party game, which means I had to cover it at some point, so why not now? The year is young, lol.

Question Corner #13 – 2/21/17

Question Corner #13 - 2/21/17

Ok guys, it’s time for another Question Corner. I don’t really have much to say here, so let’s just get this show on the road!

As usual, if you would like to submit a question of your own, you can do so here; at the contact page. Just make sure the question is appropriate, has some substance to it, and is nothing too personal (don’t ask where I live or what my family’s last name is, basically).

Q: Which Sonic game was worse, the Game Boy Advance version of Sonic the Hedgehog or Sonic the Hedgehog 2006?
A: I have not played either, but I’d probably say the GBA port of Sonic 1, just because of how bad it looks, how slow it is, and how crunched in the screen was. Sonic 2006 was definitely an unfinished bad dream, but at least there was “something” there, despite how broken it was. There was really no excuse to make a classic game like Sonic 1 look and play so badly.

Q: Would you ask your future father-in-law permission to marry his daughter?
A: I consider myself an old-fashioned guy, but not that old-fashioned. At the end of the day, I think the daughter’s opinion holds more value than the father, since she is the one making the decision. I do think it is important though to have a good relationship with the father, if you are going to marry into the family, but at the same time, he shouldn’t be the one making the decision either; if that makes sense.

Q: Do your parents enjoy playing video games?
A: My dad enjoys playing games every now and then, but he only sticks to Civilization and basic computer games (like Hearts and Spider Solitaire). My mom is even less of a gamer than my dad, but she did get into a tablet game once that involved killing zombies with bombs and other projectiles.

Q: Will you do Top 10s and lists for the handheld Mario Party games, and will you do skits for them as well?
A: At some point, yes, but not for awhile. As far as skits are concerned; I’ll consider it, but to be honest, I thought a lot of my skits were pretty dumb honestly, so I don’t see them returning. We’ll see though…

Q: Where would you like to go on vacation?
A: It’s a typical, unsurprising answer, but to my usual vacation spot in Orlando, Florida at my mom’s timeshare. I just love going there every year and it’s just very nice to go to our home away from home and relax for a week! Really don’t need to go anywhere fancy…just to a place where we can relax.

Q: What do you make of the Donkey Konga games?
A: I’ve never personally played them, but they were made at a time when rhythm gaming was picking up steam, so it’s not really surprising that they were made. They seemed pretty interesting though and games I wouldn’t mind trying someday in the future.

Q: Are you a fan of heavy metal?
A: I don’t know…it’s a little too heavy. It hurts my back whenever I try to lift it. In all seriousness, no, I’m not much of a metal guy. I can tolerate it sometimes when it comes to bands like Metallica, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of it.

Q: What is your opinion on GiivaSunner and his high quality video game rips?
A: Click Here

Q: What is your ACTUAL opinion on GiivaSunner and his high quality rips?
A: Real talk, I love his high quality rips. Listening to them last year and checking his channel every single day for new videos was always a good time I had with my friends. My favorite ones were ones that involved the DK Rap, Snow Halation and of course, good old FLEENSTONES!

Q: Do you think HAL should make a Kirby game like the 3D Mario platformers, or keep his games in a 2D format?
A: It’s a tricky thing with Kirby, because his gameplay style just seems to work very well in 2D and I don’t really see how it could in 3D. Not saying it’s impossible…I just can’t see it. I imagine it could be done though, but all of the newest Kirby games have been great in my eyes and I would like to see them create more of them.

Q: Who are your favorite video game composers?
A: David Wise, Grant Kirkhope, and Koji Kondo are my favorites for sure. I even had the pleasure of meeting and getting autographs of the former two.

Q: Do you find it sexist that Ocarina of Time has more female sages than male sages?
A: No.

Q: Did someone seriously ask you that last question?
A: Yes…

Q: Do you think Mario Party is the best party series that exists right now?
A: Yes, definitely. Say what you want about Mario Party 10 and Island Tour, but even those games can lead to enjoyment and I just haven’t been able to have the same joy with any other party game.

Q: Would you want to see more Sonic characters in Smash Bros., like Tails and Knuckles?
A: Yes I would, and those two are probably the only two characters I would like to see. They are pretty unique with their own abilities, I can see them controlling in unique ways, and they are good characters.

Q: Do you have any favorite cartoon shows aside from the Simpsons?
A: I am a very big Futurama fan as well. I’ve also watched a lot of South Park as well. In recent years, I’ve also started watching MLP: Friendship is Magic and Steven Universe, so those shows are the ones I feel most strongly about, in a good way.

Q: What do you make of leaplings?
A: I feel no different about people born on February 29th than I feel about any other person that is born on any other day of the calendar year, whether it’s Leap Year or not.

Q: What new games are you looking forward to playing in 2017?
A: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Fire Emblem Warriors are already very strong front runners.

Q: Now that Mario Party DS and Wario Land 3 have been done, what is the most requested game for you to Let’s Play on your channel?
A: Pikmin 3 is easily the biggest request I have right now and it will probably remain that way until I do the game. The only thing is….not really sure when I want to do it. I did a stream playthrough last year, but I want to play it again before I feel comfortable playing it in an LP format, since I did have some issues getting through the game.

Q: What’s your favorite Michael Jackson song?
A: My favorite MJ song is either Smooth Criminal or Billie Jean.

Ok, I think that’s it for another Question Corner! Thanks for reading guys and remember, if you want to ask a question, go to the intro of this episode where I have a link to the Contact page!

Mario Party Rankings – Extended Analysis

Mario Party Rankings - Extended Analysis

Hello everybody, SlimKirby here!

Chances are, if you have stumbled on this page, you are here to see my extended analysis of my Mario Party Rankings video I posted on November 24th, 2016. This video may have seemed like a simple 20 minute video, but the behind the scenes work that went into this was much, MUCH larger and longer. In fact, originally this video was going to include basically everything I talk about on these next few pages, but after about getting halfway done with recording the audios, I realized that people may have not wanted to watch that behemoth of a video. So I scrapped the recordings and decided to approach the video in a more concise manner. However, I still had pages and pages of notes to work off of, so as a compromise and to make sure none of that writing went to waste, I decided to host my extended analysis on my website instead. So here we are! I hope you enjoy reading a novel and a half about Mario Party!

Before we start with the analysis, here is the video if you happened to get to this page from just my website and are curious about the “simplified” version of this list.

Introduction

Hello everybody, SlimKirby here, and welcome to another Top 10/Ranking list! That’s right everybody, it’s time for what many of you have been waiting for, and like I said at the end of my “Best of… Worst of… Mario Party” series, sometime in 2016 I would take on the challenge of ranking the Mario Party games, and after taking some time to think about my decisions, I think I’m ready to present you with my personal ranking of the 10 console Mario Party titles. This took a lot of work and was a very difficult list for me to make. I’m pretty confident with my Top 3, and I think the bottom part of my list is pretty well-established too, but the middle part of the list was a nightmare for me to figure out. I think it’s just because there are so many aspects of each game where I like one thing better than another, but for another aspect alltogether, my opinion might be swapped or just completely different. However, I think that’s just the challenge of these kinds of lists and I’m sure anyone else would have the same struggles and challenges that I did, if they were to do the same thing (which I heavily encourage, if you are as passionate about these games as I am).

I think it was also pretty difficult just because I’ve been such a huge fan of the series since it first came out in 1999. Even the more recent games, which have taken a huge dip in quality compared to when the series started, I can still manage to play the games and come out of the experience at least feeling like I didn’t completely waste my time and I do think there is still some fun to be had in any of the installments, regardless of where they are ranked. So by all means, I don’t think any of the games on this list are particularly bad…just some were designed better than others. And with that being said, I am very happy to present this list to you guys and I hope you enjoy my insight.

As far as the list is concerned, like I said, I will only be looking at the ten console Mario Party games, so Mario Party Advance, Mario Party DS, Mario Party: Island Tour and Mario Party: Star Rush will not be included. I’m not trying to discredit those games, but I grew up with the console games, and I think they are definitely considered to be part of the main series, especially since they are the only ones that are numbered. As far as what I’m grading these games on, I’m mainly focusing on 3 specific points; the board game aspects, the minigames, and the extra side content. And as always, keep in mind that this list is solely based on my opinion and no one elses. If your list is different and you want to share your opinion, feel free to do so in the comments section of my ranking video, as I’m always curious to see the insight from other Mario Party enthusiasts.

So without further delay, let’s started.

The Rankings:

#10. Mario Party 10
#9. Mario Party 9
#8. Mario Party 3
#7. Mario Party 8
#6. Mario Party 5
#5. Mario Party 7
#4. Mario Party 6
#3. Mario Party 4
#2. Mario Party
#1. Mario Party 2

Conclusion

And those are my extended rankings! I hope you enjoyed reading through these because MY GOD, they took a lot of time to write and analyze. I’m not sure if I will ever do a list of this magnitude again, and if I do, I’m probably not going to use this amount of analysis in making the list. But still, because it was Mario Party, I had to give it a shot and put my all into it, just like I do for every minigame. Thanks for listening/watching/reading everybody!

SlimKirby Central #10. November 2016

SlimKirby Central #10. November 2016

Hello everybody, SlimKirby here, and welcome to the newest addition to SlimKirby Central. If you’ve stumbled on this page, you’ll notice that this update isn’t going to be like the other updates I’ve done for this series. I’ll have a video posted on November 15th, 2016 explaining the circumstances, but this month’s update is going to be a written update and not a video update. My apologies if you wanted to have my angelic voice guide you through another month of stuff happening on the SlimKirby scene, alongside my video game music collection, but hopefully this will suffice for this month because the update I was going to make just wasn’t working for me. If you would like the advice of a soundtrack you could listen to during this read-through, I recommend the Yoshi’s Woolly World soundtrack, or a game I’ve played through recently all the way through again, Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword. Just to give a few suggestions…

So just like the normal videos, I’m going to go through all the mediums one by one and just update you on things going on, things coming up, and stuff of that nature. I’ll even throw in some shout-outs along the way.

Youtube

Currently I’ve been working on wrapping up The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and I’ve also playing through Wario Land 3 and all the boards of Mario Party DS. Ocarina of Time is about finished and will actually conclude on Thursday of this week (November 17th). Ocarina of Time has been an amazing project and I’m honestly surprised at how much I’ve had fun with it. Going into the project, it wasn’t my favorite Zelda game (heck, not sure I would even put it in my Top 5), but I have a newfound respect for it after playing it again. Thankfully, although the project is ending, it will not be the last we see of Ocarina of Time. It will return next year in a small mini-series where I play through all the dungeons Master Quest style on the 3DS version of the game. This way, you get a taste of Master Quest and you get a taste of the 3DS port of the game, which is honestly, in my opinion, the definitive version of Ocarina of Time.

As for the other two projects, I’ve been moving along quite swimmingly, or at least I like to think that I am. At this point I’m about half-way through Wario Land 3, and this weekend will be the fourth of five Mario Party DS boards I cover. However, while their ends will be certain (early December for the former, late November for the latter), at this point I’m a bit uncertain of how the extra videos will go, not to mention how long they will last. Because of this, once I get to the extra content, I’m going to try and get as much done as I can. This means that I won’t be starting any new projects until roughly December 5th or 6th at the earliest, and I don’t foresee any other new projects until I’ve maybe finished the extra content for one of the two games (or maybe even both).

My main goal is to finish both Mario Party DS and Wario Land 3 before the end of the year. As usual and as probably expected, I am once again hosting a Project of the Year video that will be posted on the last day of 2016, and I would like to qualify both Wario Land 3 and Mario Party DS for the voting of that video. Even though they may be cutting it pretty damn close, the main parts of their playthroughs will be finished before the first full week of December, and I think that more than qualifies them, even if they do have quite a bit of bonus and extra content to go. Anything else that starts in December will not be finished before December ends, so they will not be qualified, but they will be qualified for the following year’s list, undoubtedly.

So breaking all of this down into a calendar representation, this is how each week’s upload schedule will look like for the next 3-4 weeks. Next week (Thanksgiving week), Wario Land 3 will be uploaded every single weekday except Thanksgiving (I have something special planned for Thanksgiving), and I’ll post the final board of Mario Party DS on that weekend. The next week will finish out the main part of Wario Land 3 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while I’ll start posting extra videos of Mario Party DS on Tuesday and Thursday in addition to Saturday and Sunday. The following week (December 5th), is when I’ll start my new project (which I’ll get into next paragraph) and that will more than likely be posted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while I use the other 4 days to finish up whatever I have left of the other two projects. I know it might seem a little confusing, but trust me, I have everything worked out in my head and I’m pretty confident in what I’m doing.

As for the new project, it’s not really a surprise as this has been advertised for an entire year by this point, but the newest LP is going to be Super Paper Mario, a project I’m really excited about and really looking forward to, especially with how well Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door were received on my channel. They were both Project of the Year recipients and I’m very curious to see if this series can do it three times in a row. However, I probably shouldn’t even get into 2017’s Project of the Year when 2016’s hasn’t even been named yet. Anyway, I do have an idea of what projects I will release after the extras of both Wario Land 3 and Mario Party DS have been finished, and at this point, I’m 90% certain they are going to remain the same, but just for fun, or at least until next month, I’m going to keep quiet and see if I can keep the suspense going. After all, I also need to decide what projects I’m going to tease at the end of the Project of the Year video for 2017!

But what else can you expect on my channel in the coming weeks? Well, I did tease a special video to be released on Thanksgiving, and if you have been paying attention to my SlimKirby Central videos as of late, you probably have an idea of what that video is going to be (I have been working on it for the entire year after all). Also, I have returned to the world of Pokemon Go, FINALLY, after too many months of not playing the game. So maybe, JUST MAYBE, I can work on another log video talking about my experiences and some of the new features I have not discussed yet. And of course, as already mentioned in this section, it wouldn’t be the end of the year without my traditional “Project of the Year” video. Even though it really doesn’t pertain to November and will be more pressing in December, I will announce that voting for that video will start not long after I finish the main game of Wario Land 3 or after I finish the extras of Mario Party DS. So basically, before the next SlimKirby Central, so keep your eyes peeled.

I think that’s all I have to talk about though, so let’s move on to some shorter sections where I have less to talk about.

Twitch

Ok, so I’ll be talking about this a bit more in my November 15th update video, but at this current point in time, I am taking a bit of a break from Twitch for a few weeks. I know this is very disappointing to many of my Twitch fans, but at this point in time, I really need a break, and I feel like it’s a very good time to take one. I just recently finished three games, I’ve had a major lack of interest in RetroAchievements, and moving forward, there’s just not really a whole lot I want to stream at the moment. So instead of fighting the stress of streaming in addition to all of that other stuff, it just makes more sense to step away for a bit and refresh myself before jumping into the fray again.

However, please do not consider this to be the end of my streaming or my Twitch channel. This break is only temporary and I already have plenty of ideas for stuff I will be doing when I return. For one, the Digimon World stream, which has been highly requested since I finished Digimon World 2 and got my hands on Digimon World 1…it will no doubt be one of my top and first priorities when I return. With how much fun DW2 was last year, I would love to experience the same hype all over again (assuming I like the game and it doesn’t pull a DW3 on me). Also, with how much fun my Name That Tune special was last month, I’d love to host another event like that over the Holidays and potentially get more competitors for not only my contests, but also for Odinspack33’s trivia nights that he hosts on his stream channel.

Speaking of which, if you would like to fill the void of your stream viewing pleasures, I highly recommend you check out Odinspack and his brother Cypheron on their co-op Twitch channel called Ami_Bros. They host a stream event every single day and I’m very set on helping them get more followers and more exposure because they are very set on making this channel huge and I would like to see them accomplish that. I’ve known Odin for a very long time and he’s a very good friend of mine, so please, go and show him and his bro some support! I also have many other friends who stream pretty regularly as well, so don’t be afraid to check them out as well, as they are very good people; SMXLI, KingofKienzan, WolfSheikah, AlanEdgeHead

PuddlePlainsHD

Still do not have a lot to talk about on this front, but we are getting closer and closer to finishing our next project. We just have to do commentary for a few more parts and we should be good to go. We also have a few other projects on backlog that we are looking into, so just stick with us and maybe we will have something for you guys in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to the return of Magfest, which will be happening in the first week of January, so maybe we can get a few other things recorded there for you guys as well.

Website

Yeah, don’t have a lot of action here either, but I’m looking to having that change when we get into 2017. I know it may seem like a broken record, but to put things in perspective, I feel like 2016 has seen the most use of my website so far in the last 2 or 3 years of this site existing. I find it difficult for me to keep this updated just because the days I used to frequent message boards and write essays every day are over, so when it comes to writing articles or reviews, I’m just not as prolific as a writer as I once was, which is kind of the downside of this kind of work that I do. However, just from writing this update, I feel like it’s something that I really should try to get back into, because there are lots of things I have to say about video games and gaming in general. But yeah, that’s my plan anyway…whether or not I succeed, we’ll just have to see. Also, I’ll try to have a new Question Corner out this week. With no streams this week, I should be able to get that done.

Star Warrior Shout-Out

I already gave a handful of shout-outs earlier, but there is something I have neglected to mention so far that I really feel like highlighting because it potentially saved me from not only spending more money, but also preventing any delays on the channel as well.

So if you’ve been watching the Ocarina of Time playthrough, you know that I was having some slight issues with my capture device as of late. I really don’t know why that was the case, it’s still a mystery to me, and I’m not even 100% sure that the problem has been fixed. But, thanks to Youtube user General Snivy, I was able to not only contact Elgato technical support, but he also helped me run some tests to make sure everything was working properly. And as of right now, I think I might be good to go moving forward. Again, I’m not 100% convinced everything is working perfectly, but with how fickle technology can be and how it can be your worst enemy in this type of work, I feel a lot better moving forward.

So of course, this month’s Star Warrior shout-out goes out to General Snivy for helping me out of, honestly a situation that kind of freaked me out a little bit. I haven’t had any major tech issues (with exception to my Internet when it comes to streaming, but that’s another issue entirely) in a very long time and I was kind of hoping that I was done with that stuff. Given, I shouldn’t be so ignorant as there will no doubt always be some sort of issues that develop, but still, it was nice having a winning streak for once and it’s also nice to know that the streak can kind of continue. General Snivy has been a long-time watcher of my videos and he was also a frequent competitor in the Star Warrior Cup tournaments I used to host on Mario Kart 8. I also interact with him on Twitter sometimes (which is how all of this tech support started) and he is a very nice guy. He does Let’s Plays of his own on his own channel, consisting of Banjo Kazoie for X-Box Live Arcade, Diddy Kong Racing, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Final Mix and various other games, so check him out if you are interested in those games, and thank you General for saving me from a giant freak-out.

Conclusion

So with all of that said and done, I think I’m about ready to wrap this update up. Thanks to everyone for all of your continued support and patience, and again, I do apologize for this being a written update instead of a video one and of course for the stream hiatus, but I’m hoping with a month and a half left of 2016, we can end the year on a bang, so let’s see what we can do. I’m really excited for next month’s update as it’s looking to be more of a look-forward into 2017, and I’m very optimistic about the new year. 2016 has been a difficult year for sure, and with recent political updates, 2017 may not have a lot of high hopes right now, but I feel like the more negatively you look at something before it happens, you’re already setting yourself up for failure, which is not a good thing. So let’s all just try to be the best we can be and do what we can to make this world worth living, ok? I’ll talk you guys soon! Later folks!

SlimKirby Central #9. October 2016

SlimKirby Central #9. October 2016

Welcome to the ninth issue of SlimKirby Central! This is a series where I get into what’s currently going on with my Youtube channel, my Twitch channel and everything else I do in between; including some updates of what’s going on for me outside of the Internet world, if I feel like it’s applicable.

Not a lot to mention for the month of October. Just general updates on what projects would be starting on both Youtube and Twitch, giving some progress on a video that’s been in production for awhile now, and I give a very special shout-out to someone whose work I’ve admired and respected for some time now.

SlimKirby Central #8. September 2016

Welcome to the eighth issue of SlimKirby Central! This is a series where I get into what’s currently going on with my Youtube channel, my Twitch channel and everything else I do in between; including some updates of what’s going on for me outside of the Internet world!

For September, there wasn’t a whole lot to mention, despite the length of the video probably saying otherwise. Just giving an update of projects to expect by the end of the year, and I also start talking about some things on my mind and do a little reflection on my attitude when responding to comments.

Question Corner #5 – 3/18/2016

Question Corner #5 – 3/18/2016

I feel I must apologize for the lateness of this entry. Not because I didn’t do it, because this has been ready for weeks now, but for some reason, it just kinda slipped my mind that I hadn’t put this up yet. It’s like going out of your way to make a really good pasta for dinner, but then just forgetting that you made it and you accidentally put a pizza in the oven instead. Entry #6, which might be ready soon, should be up sooner than this one because of this random delay.

Before we get started, as usual….if you would like to submit a questions of your own, go to the Contact page and send me a question for the Question Corner. Questions only focusing on “What LP will I do?” or “When will you LP this game?” will not be answered, so do not make a habit of asking those questions. And of course, please leave out questions that I’ve answered before and anything personal that doesn’t really belong on this website. Thank you!

Q: “What was your childhood dream job?”
A: Honestly, just making a job out of video games in some fashion would have been satisfying for my younger self. Whether it was making them, playtesting them, or even what I’m doing know with making videos on Youtube; anything that would put me in the field would have been just dandy.

Q: “What is your least favorite Let’s Play that you have done?”
A: Aside from the really bad camcorder projects of the old days, probably my blind run of Kirby’s Dream Land 3. Mario Party 3 is also pretty bad, but that KDL3 playthrough was just…ugh! I just get a bad feeling from even thinking about that one. Just the fact that it was a blind run, with post commentary just made it seem like it was very unprofessionally done. I’m glad I went back to redo that project at a later date and time, because the redone project was a lot better. Still wasn’t super crazy about the game, but I would have much rather had that new playthrough than the old one.

Q: “What are your 10 favorite characters from the Simpsons?”
A: Homer Simpson, Ralph Wiggum, Troy McClure, Sideshow Bob, Lenny Leonard, Carl Carlson, Professor Frink, Fat Tony, Dr. Hibbert, Rainer Wolfcastle. I think that’s 10! Don’t feel like going into too much detail though, so I’ll just say this; The Simpsons is a great show with many great characters.

Q: ”What would you do if you won the lottery?”
A: First I would pay off ALL of my student loans so I would never have to worry about those ever again. Then, honestly, I would just save a lot of the money just in case I would ever need it for a rainy day. You never know when it could come in handy.

Q: “What did you think of Futurama being cancelled again?”
A: Honestly, I don’t have much of a problem with it this time. This time they were able to end it with a proper finale, they got two pretty good quality seasons out of it being on Comedy Central, and I feel like it has met its goal this time. I’m personally someone who doesn’t mind the newer seasons of The Simpsons, but I do agree that the quality is much lower than what it used to be, and I think if Futurama tried to squeeze a few more seasons out, it would have started going down the same path.

Q: “What is your opinion on Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts?”
A: I’ve personally never played it, so I can’t give you an actual opinion of the game, but based on what I have seen of it, it’s disappointing because it doesn’t really deliver on what made Banjo such a great series (at that point). Whether the actual game itself is good or not, it’s not what many faithful BK followers bought an Xbox for, and it wasn’t really what Microsoft was paying for when they initially bought Rare. Think of it this way…you bought a steak, but instead were given a salad. Maybe the salad is really good, but it’s not what you paid for. That’s what many people seem to have an issue with in regards to Nuts & Bolts. Given, a part of that might be on the consumers and not Rare, because it was pretty clear that Nuts and Bolts was not going to be that new Banjo game everyone wanted, but I feel like the development was not necessarily denying that false identity either. Or rather, they didn’t do enough.

Q: “How far are you from getting a 3DS Capture Card and where can I donate to the cause?”
A: I’m still a few hundred away, but I’ve collected a lot of really great donations from the Star Warrior community so far! If you would like to donate, here is a link to my donation page!

Q: “Have you considered getting into the Mario Party development team?”
A: If it were that easy, then yes, I would totally get on board and make changes and get that series back on the right track. I really don’t see how NDCube continues to screw up on these games because the Mario Party fanbase has been quite vocal about what they want and what they don’t want. Mairo Party 10 was a huge oversight on their part and they could have made an excellent game if they actually did their research.

Q: “On a scale of 1-10, how cute is Kirby?”
A: Kirby gets a freaking 10, no questions asked!

Q: “For your best of/worst of Mario Party series, did you get the ideas for the skits from the games themselves?”
A: Pretty much, at least for Mario Party 5 and onward. I didn’t really have any themes in mind for MP1-MP4. I was just winging it for Mario Party 1, and my skits for Mario Party 2 were based on the viewer response from the skits in the first set of videos. Mario Party 3 was just an experiment I wanted to try on having a guest on board. Mario Party 4 was kind of relevant since there was the mini-mushroom and everything, but really I just didn’t want to spend much time on the skits that time. Everything else tried to feature something from the games I was covering, like the dreams of MP5, the night/day of MP6, the vacation of MP7, the candy of MP8 and driving around in a car for MP9.

Q: “What is your favorite food?”
A: I am a sucker for Italian food, whether it’s pizza or pasta (which explains the pasta scenario I made at the beginning of this post). I am also a big fan of seafood too. There’s an amazing seafood restaurant in my area that we go to for my birthday every year and I look forward to that day every year because of that. Those are definitely my favorites though.

Q: “What are your thoughts on the passing of David Bowie?”
A: Truly heartbreaking! David Bowie is one of my all-time favorite musicians and musical artists and his death hit me pretty hard. I used to listen to his music for hours during my teenage years and it got me through some pretty tough times.

Q: “Do you plan to use face-cam on any of your videos?”
A: If it’s a project/game that would be enhanced by the usage of a face cam, like Slender, Five Nights At Freddys, or many of the other reactionary horror games out there, I’ll consider the idea, but it’s more than likely going to be a straight “No!” I don’t really think facecam adds anything to a Let’s Play and those who “think” it does, only think that way because multi-channel networks tell them that it does, or just think “Well, pewdiepie does it,” so it’s automatically a successful idea that needs to be incorporated (which is also something MCNs will tell you). I mean, I suppose it could add a bit of a personal touch to some videos, but they are mostly used successfully when it’s a game like Amnesia (the horror game, not the dating sim) or Outlast, where Pewdiepie is screaming his head off and the viewers have a visual aid to laugh alongside with. That’s the only time it really works, in my opinion.

Q: “Have you considered stopping Youtube altogether?
A: In terms of just randomly thinking “You know what, I don’t want to do this anymore,” no, I have never really considered it. However, in terms of thinking “Well, there might come a day where I will need to put this aside for more important things,” yeah, I wonder about that all the time. Hell, there are recent days where I have to start thinking about that stuff. As far as what I’m doing about it, I’m just taking it one day at a time and if I need to stop, I will. However, it’s going to be really hard to get me to stop completely. I’m sure I’ll find a way back to this somehow.

Q: “What are your thoughts on the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games?”
A: I think the games are really good in their own right. I would rather play the handheld adventure games because that is where the series shines most, but the MD games are very interesting spinoff titles. I’ve never been able to completely get through a Mystery Dungeon game, but I think it’s because I always approach the games in the worst way possible. Like for RetroAchievements where I expect that I need to do every single sidequest and optional mission in order to get everything. I should honestly just play through the games.

Q: “What kind of movies do you like to watch?”
A: I’m not a very big movie guy, but only in terms of going out to see them. These days I often have a lot more fun watching movies with friends on Netflix, or having a group movie night with my Skype friends. I can watch or pretty much get into anything as long as it’s not super long or boring to the point where I get distracted by the piece of dust in the corner of the room. Some of my favorite movies though are classic movies like Forrest Gump and The Right Stuff, but I’ve gotten into a number of movies very easily. I am also a fan of classic Adam Sandler movies like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.

Q: What kind of books do you like to read?”
A: Someone was really, really driven on getting the very basic and broad questions out of the way because I think he asked the previous question too. Anyway, I’m not really that much of a reader. I think it’s because I get distracted really easily and sometimes if I’m not feeling it, I start slurring words together in my head to get through the page/chapter faster. Recently I read through the Hunger Games trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed it, although I only got interested after watching the first movie. I think my favorite book though is “The Three Kingdoms” by Luo Guanzong, which is a novelization of the “Three Kingdoms” saga, which is the same saga the Dynasty Warriors games are based off of as well, so I had a lot of fun reading through that because I had some prior knowledge through the games. That’s all I can really say about books though.

Q: “What was your college experience like?”
A: My college experience was…decent. I wouldn’t say it was a great experience because I kind of felt like the things I did learn were great tools for the real world and I learned a lot about myself as well. However, the things I did go to college for, and by extension, the things I paid thousands and thousands of dollars for, really weren’t that worth it for me. I don’t feel like my professors (most of them anyway) were really that great and a lot of things I did learn were things I had to self-teach myself and it’s debatable if I even left the institution with all the knowledge I did need (at least in relation to what I was studying). Some of the best things I learned were “how to keep a solid budget,” “how to properly schedule your tasks,” “how to keep your living space in order,” “how to deal with (bad) roommates,” and let’s face it, I did all of that stuff while also balancing a Youtube channel that was starting to become moderately successful during those times. Those are all good things, but not things I went to college for. So at the end of the day, college ended up feeling like a fifty-thousand dollar expense that I will never get back and I’ll be paying that expense for the next 10 or 20 years. Not to mention that I don’t really feel that prepared for the real world either. Maybe I just had a bad major choice for my particular institution (I went to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana), so I’m not going to say college is not good, because there is definitely some value to it. It’s just not worth the thousands and thousands of dollars you have to pay for it, especially considering that college isn’t for everyone.

Q: “Have there been games that you didn’t like as much, but after Let’s Playing them, you liked more? And the reverse?”
A: I’m glad I got this question during the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze playthrough because that game is slowly becoming the perfect model for your question. I was not really into the game that much during my first playthrough, but now, after playing through about 60% of the game for the LP project, I’m finding that I’m enjoying it a whole lot more and it’s slowly becoming one of my favorite Wii U games as a result. Mario Party 7 was another game that I wasn’t too crazy about either, but I liked it a lot more after the LP as well. As for games I found I didn’t like as much after finishing….it’s hard to say. I don’t feel like there have been any games I’ve just not liked anymore after LPing them. Super Mario Sunshine was kind of demoralizing, but that was moreso because I went through the game 100% three times in a span of like 2 or 3 months, not really because of the game or project itself. Mario Party 10 was also a disappointment, but I was already kind of not digging that game anyway.

Q: “Should Masahiro Sakurai be replaced as the main developer of Smash Bros?”
A: No, definitely not. I don’t like some of his decisions, and I think he needs to stop giving ‘so much’ special treatment to his own series, but like it or not, he is a good developer. I just think he needs a little direction in some cases. But as far as being the main developer, I don’t think that should be taken away from him and he doesn’t deserve to be “Kojima’d” for lack of a better term.

Well, that’s it for another Question Corner! Thanks to everyone for the questions and I will see you guys next time!

Lists

One thing I like to do in my spare time is watch Top 10 lists of things from video games, television shows, or really any type of category if I find it interesting enough. On Youtube, I’ve done a few series where rank some personal opinions of mine together in a Top 10 format, or in some cases, I gauged the viewers and contributors of my channel. Either way, here are some of the lists I’ve done on my channel.

Current Lists:
None

Completed/Ongoing Lists:

SlimKirby’s Projects of the Year

Every year since 2013, I’ve made a video on the final day of the year where I highlight my favorite projects (and your favorite projects) in a Top 10 list format. These videos are always fun to make because it’s a trip down memory lane; in some cases a glorious trip down memory lane.

Best of… Worst of… Mario Party

Mario Party has always been a big thing on my channel….but which Mario Party is my favorite? What are some of my favorite boards? What about minigames? I did this series because I noticed how much people loved and enjoyed my Mario Party content, almost to the point where it feels like I’m committing sin if I’m not playing Mario Party or playing Mario Party knockoff. Regardless though, Mario Party is a very special series for me too, and to celebrate the 10th game coming out, I decided to do something special for the series. This series could potentially expand depending on how many more Mario Party games come out.

Mario Party

Mario Party

Game: Mario Party
Start Date: March 8th, 2009
Runtime: 9 hours
Videos: 54

Mario and his friends are arguing about who is the true superstar of the bunch. However, when the argument starts to get heated, Toad stops the flame war and decides that the group needs to play a game of Mario Party to determine who the superstar really is. This game was the start of Hudson Soft’s famous Mario Party franchise and was the flagship title that brought all of our favorite board games and mini-games to the gaming world!

Although this is the first installment of the Mario Party franchise, this was not the earliest Mario Party playthrough on my channel. I had previously done both Mario Party and Mario Party 2 (along with Mario Party 3 and Mario Party 4) before I came back to do this replay project. I had some problems with copyright on the original Mario Party and Mario Party 2 projects, so I had to remove the videos, but I did not have to remove Mario Party 3 or Mario Party 4, which makes them the earliest Mario Party projects on my channel. The older Mario Party projects can no longer be found.

This project is definitely one of my favorites of all the projects I have done on my channel. It set-up, established, and continued a lot of long-running jokes that would return in other Mario Party playthroughs and other LPs in general, including my tirade against the one and only Princess Peach!
