When a video game gets very successful, it’s only natural for developers to want to create a sequel. It’s also natural for developers to try out new ideas when they make their sequels, including the notion of drastically changing the gameplay and the style of the game in question. The Legend of Zelda is an example of this when they made Zelda II for the NES. Although it had a nice overworld map, puzzle-filled dungeons and various caves to explore throughout the land of Hyrule, Zelda II controlled very differently from its predecessor. In fact, I imagine present-day Zelda fans who didn’t grow up with this title would not be overly fond of this game because of how different and how difficult it is compared to the other games of the franchise. However, it’s still a part of the Zelda lore and is definitely worth a look at.

Before moving on to other Zelda titles, I wanted to get completely caught up with the series (at least up to Majora’s Mask anyway) and fill in any gaps I left hanging beforehand. However, Zelda II wasn’t a game I was overly familiar with. In fact, before this playthrough, I had only completed the game once beforehand and that was a few weeks before the end of 2017. So safe to say, I was going into this title with only a little practice and not a great deal of experience. However, from when I played the game, there were definitely some things I appreciated and liked about the experience, so at the very least, you could say I wasn’t repulsed by the game to the point where I just didn’t want to cover it at all. So I figured it was as good of a time as any to finally mark this off of my Let’s Play list, and here we are!

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Game: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Start Date: November 30th, 2015

After Nintendo released Fire Emblem (7) to North American audiences, they seemed to understand that Fire Emblem was a series that quite a number of North American gamers wanted to be a part of, and they continued the tradition by bringing over Fire Emblem 8 as well, also known as Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. This tale follows the story of Eirika and Ephraim, two children who hail from an attacked and nearly-destroyed nation, trying to win back their lost homeland in addition to saving the land of Magvel itself from a dark power.

I’ve definitely gotten my feet wet with the Fire Emblem series before, and after taking on both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn before; The Sacred Stones should be a cakewalk for me. This was the 3rd big-time RPG and/or strategy game I’ve done in a year though, so hopefully my fatigue doesn’t get to me!

Banjo-Tooie

Banjo-Tooie

Game: Banjo Tooie
Start Date: March 10th, 2014
Runtime: 13 hours
Videos: 39

Gruntilda the Witch had met with a very unfortunate end after the events of Banjo-Kazooie, being trapped under a boulder in the ground. However, after two years of being trapped under Banjo and Kaoozie’s victory, Grunty breaks free and is out for revenge, and will do everything necessary to make sure she wins again! Banjo and Kazooie will have to extend to greater heights to beat the witch this time, learning new moves, exploring new areas, and possibly splitting up to achieve greater success.

I really enjoyed the Banjo-Kazooie playthrough from last year and was very much looking forward to starting this LP as soon as possible. It wasn’t until 2014 that I could get this going, but whenever you start a playthrough of a really good Rareware game, expect to hit the ground running and taking it all the way to the end!

The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse

The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse

Game: The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse
Start Date: August 8th, 2013
Runtime: 1:14 hours

Who would have thought that Capcom, the minds behind Street Fighter and Mega Man, would actually enter the realm of Disney in their video games? Well, truth be told, back in the day, this was Capcom’s bread and butter, making tons of video games based on popular Disney movies and characters. In this game, Pluto has been kidnapped by mighty Emperor Pete and it’s up to Mickey to save his pal, entering a world of danger, magic, and lots of other perilous things.

This was a game that I played very briefly in my youth, being able to rent it from the video store downtown. It was a game that I remembered very well though, so much that I wanted to play it for you guys. It’s been a long time since I have touched this game, but I was more than looking forward to it.

Kirby Squeak Squad

Kirby Squeak Squad

Game: Kirby Squeak Squad
Start Date: March 4th, 2013
Runtime: 4 hours

Kirby really loves his sweets, but when a group of thieving mice called The Squeaks come to town and steal his dessert, the fun and games are over. Kirby must now give them chase, retrieve his lost cake, and pick up tons and tons of other treasure that he finds throughout his adventure.

It had been awhile since I used my DS-recording technology so I figured another DS Let’s Play would be a very welcome addition to the channel. The game I chose was actually a very random selection, but I figured that Kirby never usually did me wrong and this was a game I actually really liked and felt was underappreciated in a lot of different ways. This project also featured a lot of firsts for my channel, including the first time I used a channel-specific side-border for my videos, and the first time I used a “Previously on….” clip segment to remind people what happened in the previous video (most of the time it being a funny moment).

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Game: Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Start Date: May 31st, 2011
Runtime: 47 hours
Videos: 127

A few years have passed since the events that concluded the story of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and trouble is once again brewing across the land of Tellius! Begnion is taking things a bit too far in what is left of Daein, Queen Elincia is struggling to get control of her nation during its restoration, and the hero of the Mad King’s War seems to be missing. Will all of these concerns be resolved in Radiant Dawn? I guess we will have to wait and see.

At this point, I felt like the running joke of me never playing Radiant Dawn should finally come to an end, because I did always have some intention of playing it…I just wasn’t ready for it at the time. This project was quite the undertaking though, with a huge library of videos (most of which in the 30+ minute range), and a lot of content to cover. I was dedicated however, and I feel at the end of the day, this was one of the biggest milestones ever achieved on my channel.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Game: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Start Date: January 17th, 2010
Runtime: 10 hours
Videos: 65

The Mario series has come a very long way, and although his games started on arcade machines and the NES, this game showed us that Mario went on adventures even when he was a little baby! Even before they could be delivered to their parents, Baby Mario and Luigi were separated, with Mario ending up on the back of his future friend Yoshi while Luigi was captured by a koopa wizard named Kamek. It’s up to Yoshi to find and rescue Baby Luigi and and send the babies to a proper home so they could have a nice Italian upbringing.

This was the fifth “replay” project I did on my channel, as I had done some videos for the game at a prior date, but due to the bad (camcorder) quality of the project, with no commentary to boot, I decided to redo the project with a modern spin. The older videos are no longer available on my channel.

I normally did not like doing replays back-to-back, but due to the success of Kirby Super Star and people wanting more from the SNES era, I couldn’t ignore the demand for another high quality SNES game, and Yoshi’s Island was the perfect candidate! The project was quite a challenge to overcome, as getting 100% in this game is quite the daunting task, but when you stick a game from my childhood in front of my face, you are never going to hear any complaints from me!

This project also featured some content from the Game Boy Advance remake “Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island,” as I showcased the six bonus levels that were exclusive to only that port of the game. This content was shown later, long after the project was finished.

War has broken out across Tellius and the country of Crimea has been completely obliterated. However, when the princess is found alive by a band of mercenaries, the hope of Crimea’s restoration may be close at hand!

This project was a really big deal back in the day, as I knew this was going to be my first 100+ video project, and I was wondering if the game could even be enjoyable or entertaining to my fans for the amount of time this playthrough was going to be featured on my channel. However, it turns out that my fears were unwarranted when I actually made the attempt. Although I wouldn’t say it was one of my more successful projects, it definitely had a solid and dedicated fanbase; a fanbase that egged me on for years to play the sequel….
