Super Mario 3D Land

I would put up a clever description of how Bowser once again kidnaps Princess Peach, forcing Mario into another grand adventure, but I feel like the guy is running a little empty on unique ways to accomplish that feat, so I’ll just chalk it up to Bowser getting bored and that he just wanted to do something to keep himself busy. That’s right, we have another Mario game to cover and this time we are covering the 3DS classic; Super Mario 3D Land. After spending a couple of titles in the 2D platformer space, Nintendo decided it was time to try another 3D adventure with less emphasis on exploring locales or traveling through space, and more emphasis on straight-up platforming. In addition to that, this title also seems to draw a lot of inspiration from other games from Mario’s past as well, whether it’s power-ups, gimmicks, music, secrets; just a nice celebration of Mario’s past.

My initial plan was to cover Super Mario 3D Land the previous year, but due to Fire Emblem and the Oracle games taking up a huge amount of that time, I had to delay my plans a few months, but decided I wanted to get through this game as soon as possible the following year just so I could continue my streak of covering a 3D Mario “almost” every year, or at least regularly enough. This was a game I knew I could get through easily enough and finish in a quick amount of time, so even with my reduced upload schedule in 2019, I knew it would be a quick one to slip in there.

Mario’s Game Gallery

Mario was big back in the 90s, so it’s no surprise that Interplay decided to do a game where you can play a small collection of board games with Mario…right?

NO! I AM NOT DRUNK! I SWEAR TO GOD! Ok, so it doesn’t sound like much, but I did find some humor with this game back in the day and I decided to bring it back for a small weekend project. After all, I was smack dab in the middle of Pokemon Gold at this point and I needed something a little less serious to make me feel better about the hours and hours of life I spend grinding Pokemon levels. At least you can say….it’s nice short watch, I suppose.

Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64

Mario has been on lots of adventures, but Super Mario 64 was the first adventure to take Mario in a 3D environment. Princess Peach has invited Mario over for a slice of cake, but when he arrives at the castle, he finds that things are not as they seem. The Princess has once again been captured, in her own castle no less, and Mario must rescue her, while also restoring the power of the stars to the castle. By doing this, Mario will not only save the day, but might still get that piece of cake!

Super Mario 64 was a game I was kind of worried about at first, mainly due to the sheer amount of people who have done a playthrough of the game on Youtube already, but thankfully it’s a game anyone can get into, no matter how many times you play it or watch it. This game is definitely a legendary title of the Mario series and its influence has been widespread throughout the ages.

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels

So it turns out the American version of Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn’t the same as what the Japanese got, claiming that the original Super Mario Bros. 2 was way too hard for American gamers. Thankfully though, this gaming experience wasn’t lost on us, as Nintendo of America was nice enough to include it for the very first time in the Super Mario All-Stars cartridge. Now, let’s see what this game REALLY has in store for us! =D

This is a project done in conjunction with three other games as part of the Super Mario All-Stars Let’s Play. I had just finished Radiant Dawn at this point and wanted to take it easy before I got back into any major games, so I figured a run-through all of the classic NES Mario games was in order!

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

The Mario series has come a very long way, and although his games started on arcade machines and the NES, this game showed us that Mario went on adventures even when he was a little baby! Even before they could be delivered to their parents, Baby Mario and Luigi were separated, with Mario ending up on the back of his future friend Yoshi while Luigi was captured by a koopa wizard named Kamek. It’s up to Yoshi to find and rescue Baby Luigi and and send the babies to a proper home so they could have a nice Italian upbringing.

This was the fifth “replay” project I did on my channel, as I had done some videos for the game at a prior date, but due to the bad (camcorder) quality of the project, with no commentary to boot, I decided to redo the project with a modern spin. The older videos are no longer available on my channel.

I normally did not like doing replays back-to-back, but due to the success of Kirby Super Star and people wanting more from the SNES era, I couldn’t ignore the demand for another high quality SNES game, and Yoshi’s Island was the perfect candidate! The project was quite a challenge to overcome, as getting 100% in this game is quite the daunting task, but when you stick a game from my childhood in front of my face, you are never going to hear any complaints from me!

This project also featured some content from the Game Boy Advance remake “Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island,” as I showcased the six bonus levels that were exclusive to only that port of the game. This content was shown later, long after the project was finished.
