Donkey Kong Land 2

Donkey Kong Land 2

After the success of Donkey Kong Country 2, it’s no surprise that Rare wanted to keep capitalizing on their successful franchise by putting variations of the game on the Game Boy…despite how strange Donkey Kong Land was by itself. For this game however, Rare spent a little more time emulating Donkey Kong Country 2, down to the very same level names and gimmicks that made the game known. How does this hold up compared to it’s console counterpart?

I needed another short project to bridge the gap between my first two big projects of the year, so once again, I decided to take a trip back to the Game Boy. I told you this was going to be the year of handhelds. I was definitely looking forward to this one though, just because it was the best of the DKL trilogy, from what I remember of it. However…is that really saying much? Let’s find out…

Mega Man II

Mega Man II

Dr. Wily never knows when to quit…and neither did Capcom back when Mega Man was at his peak in popularity. Every year, at least for awhile anyway, Capcom would grant a release on NES and a release on Game Boy, making sure the Mega Man madness would never quit and so gamers could have a new game on each particular platform. However, knowing how incredible Mega Man 2 was for its fans, how did the Game Boy version of this sequel take off? I think it’s time we try to discover that answer.

I admittedly wanted something short to work on in between projects, and since I’ve been trying to cover all the handheld ground for game series I’ve covered on console platforms, and because there is a lot of Mega Man to sort through, I decided to attack this game; Mega Man II for the Game Boy. I remember enjoying this game when I played it for Retro Achievements, but at the same time, I also know that this game is a bit of a sore subject for die-hard Mega Man fans. After finishing the game, I can understand why, but at the very least, this is a game I could recommend for newbies to the series, who might find the NES installments to have too high of a difficulty curve.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge

That Dr. Wily seems content on not keeping the peace, as he is up to his old tricks, but this time on the Game Boy! Capcom decided that with all the Mega Man love the NES was getting, that it made sense to put the series on the Nintendo handheld as well. And let me just tell you…these games are not just simple ports.

So I needed something short to kill some time before my anniversary. Banjo Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge ran a bit short, so I needed another game about revenge. Enter Mega Man! I had plans to start the Game Boy series at some point this year. This seemed like an appropriate time to, I guess.

Pokemon Trading Card Game

Pokemon Trading Card Game

Pokemon fever was running wild during the Late 90’s and with an anime and video game gaining popularity…naturally a trading card game was needed to further capitalize on it’s domination. And with a new card game, why not have a video game iteration of the card game as well? Sounds like a swell idea to me!

This was a game that I’ve owned for the longest time, but was never able to complete it until recent years (thanks to the encouragement of Puddle Plains HD). I’m happy to show this game in full, because it’s honestly a lot of fun once you have a grasp on how to play it effectively. Let the card memes begin!

Donkey Kong Land

Donkey Kong Country was a huge success on the Super Nintendo. However, Cranky Kong was a bit unconvinced on how well it did, saying that the only reason it sold well was due to the high quality graphics at the time. To counter this, DK and Diddy once again go on another quest, this time on the Game Boy, to show that graphics aren’t everything and that Donkey Kong is just a fun series in general.

Here’s the thing about computer repairs; sometimes it takes more than just one Game Boy project to last the entirety of the repair duration. So after Metroid II was completed, I went to another Game Boy game that I had yet to cover and this time it was Donkey Kong Land. Although not as amazing as the Country games, it was still very interesting to check these games out.

Metroid II: Return of Samus

Metroid II: Return of Samus

Game: Metroid II: Return of Samus
Start Date: February 2nd, 2017
End Date: February 7th, 2017

Samus Aran is back in action and this time, she’s armed to take down some Metroids. SR388 is the Metroid homeworld and Samus has strict orders to take down every Metroid for fear they will once again be used for malicious intentions in the galaxy. She’ll need to brave the deepest and darkest caverns to accomplish this task and may come face to face with Metroid royalty.

This project pretty much came out of nowhere due to some computer issues I was having and needing some smaller projects to do in the meantime while I was getting the computer fixed up. Metroid II was a game I finished for the first time not long before this happened, so I decided to give this project a shot. It was on my list to do this year anyway, but it was nice to move it up for this occasion as I had fun doing this game for you guys.

Pokémon Gold

Pokémon Gold

Game: Pokémon Gold
Start Date: May 18th, 2015

A few years have passed since the initial Pokémon adventure story, where a young kid from Pallet Town became the Pokémon League champion, stopped Team Rocket and captured all 151 Pokémon. All of this happened in the land of Kanto, but to the west of this land lies the land of Johto, where a new adventure is unfolding with new experiences, new challenges and 100 new Pokémon.

Pokémon Trainer Rob is BACK! But now in the land of Johto. After my Pokémon Blue LP back in 2012, I knew it was only a matter of time before I made my way back to the world of Pokémon for Generation II. Not only will this adventure be longer, but with the added challenge of trying to complete the Pokédex..AGAIN? Guess I’m in for the long haul…

Wario Land II

Wario Land II

Game: Wario Land II
Start Date: January 9th, 2014
Runtime: 8 hours

After his hard fought victory in the first Wario Land game, it seems our hero has gotten used to the lazy lifestyle of owning a castle and lots of treasure. However, what Wario doesn’t realize is that the same pirates from the first game are still on the move and ready to attack. This quiet morning at Castle Wario will soon be the beginning of another classic chase of Wario and pirates.

I had not intended to do an LP of this game so soon, but when one of my LP ideas didn’t pan-out correctly, I needed another idea pronto and Wario was around to pick up the slack. This wasn’t a game I was super fond of or remembered much of, but it was memorable in its own right and was another project I wanted to attempt in some way.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Runtime: 3:22 hours

After getting booted out of Mario’s Castle in Super Mario Land 2, Wario knew that he was destined to own a castle of his own; which brings him to Kitchen Island! Although the island is covered in pirates, Wario doesn’t seem to mind, beating them up good and collecting as many coins as he possibly can. I suppose anger and greed “could” be a solution to domestic issues…at least for Wario anyway.

This was the ninth “replay” project I did on my channel, as I had done some videos for the game at a prior date, but due to the poorer quality of the project, I decided to redo the project with a modern spin. The videos for the old project are still available for viewing on my channel, but there is no longer a playlist associated with that version.

Wario Land was another game I really wanted to replay because I wasn’t completely satisfied with my original rendition, done during a time where bad controller lag and unsynched audio problems nearly destroyed any enjoyment I had with the project. Overall, I was satisfied with this redo as it not only fixed all of the issues of the original project, but was also really fun to play through again.

Pokémon Blue

Pokémon Blue

Game: Pokémon Blue

Runtime: 19 hours

Pokémon has come a long way since it’s initial creation back in the 90’s, and in the video game world, it all started with this game (along with the Red and Yellow versions of course). Allow me to walk you through the scenario; you are a young kid, you live next to the world’s most popular expert in Pokémon, who has a grandson who is the biggest jerk in the universe, and one fateful day, you are not only given a Pokémon of your own, but also the permission to travel on a grand adventure with you and your Pokémon friends. This notion made kids around the world go crazy for Pokémon, and this was the start of it all!

At this point in time, including games I would later replay, this was the 50th playthrough I did on my channel, and to celebrate this milestone, I wanted to do something big! I had wanted to do something with Pokémon for a very long time, but I didn’t want it to be anything small or “expected.” So for my 50th project, not only did I play my first Pokémon game, but I added the challenge of trying to catch all 150 Pokemon. This was an endeavor that I do not regret in any way, shape or form, as it led to one of my most enjoyable projects, for not just you guys, but also myself. I had started doubting that I would ever have a playthrough as good as The Simpsons: Hit and Run, until I played Pokémon.
