It’s time for the next generation of Mario Kart, and this generation has handgliders and undersea driving…how adventurous! This installment of the game was released on the 3DS and became, easily, one of the 3DS’s biggest multiplayer and online games at the time! It’s time for another good-old fashioned race!

Mario Kart 7 was definitely a game I wanted to get done this year at some point, and since there was a convenient weekend project opening at the tail end of summer, it seemed like a good as time as any to get things moving here and get one step closer to being done/caught up with the Mario Kart series. I also feel like this is the first time I’ve been closer to finishing off the Mario Kart series than the Mario Party series. But anyway, back to what matters, another stroll through Mario Kart as I take a gander at all the grand prix cups on 150cc and Expert, look at some of the other modes that are available, and even take a few sessions of the game online for some fun and excitement!

After the success of Donkey Kong Country 2, it’s no surprise that Rare wanted to keep capitalizing on their successful franchise by putting variations of the game on the Game Boy…despite how strange Donkey Kong Land was by itself. For this game however, Rare spent a little more time emulating Donkey Kong Country 2, down to the very same level names and gimmicks that made the game known. How does this hold up compared to it’s console counterpart?

I needed another short project to bridge the gap between my first two big projects of the year, so once again, I decided to take a trip back to the Game Boy. I told you this was going to be the year of handhelds. I was definitely looking forward to this one though, just because it was the best of the DKL trilogy, from what I remember of it. However…is that really saying much? Let’s find out…

The NES was definitely the system that put home consoles on the map. From Super Mario Bros. to The Legend of Zelda to Punch-Out, so many classics series and classic games debuted on this magnificent platform. During the last generation and the era of the Wii U, Nintendo decided to honor the system by making a game that would revisit the old system and challenge gamers to master all the challenges those games could put out there. This game was called NES Remix!

I discovered this game pretty late into the NES Remix hype. I didn’t get any of the games until Ultimate NES Remix came out for the Nintendo 3DS. However, once I did get around to playing it, I enjoyed every moment of it and thought it would be an interesting playthrough to do for the channel. So here I am today with NES Remix for the Nintendo Wii U!

Hello everybody, SlimKirby here, and welcome to another edition of the Question Corner!

I decided to release this as a Christmas Eve gift for you guys. Why in particular? No reason really….I was just checking how many questions I had in my backlog and noticed that I had over 20, so instead of waiting for the next day I picked to answer questions, I figured why not just upload what I had very quickly. That’s really all there is to it I guess.

As usual, if you would like to send your own questions, you can do so at my Contact page. Just make sure the questions are questions I have not answered before, are appropriate questions that don’t get too deep into my personal life, and are at least somewhat discussion-length and not just simple “Yes or No” questions.

Q: What would you like to see in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild?
A: I think the game looks pretty promising so far, but as far as what I would want most from it; I just want the game to keep giving me a reason to come back. The idea of an open-world Zelda is pretty awesome, but if they make the world too big and too empty with not a lot of reason to come back, nor have some kind of continuous goal for me to achieve, I don’t think that would be a great move for the game. What captivated me about other Zelda games was the gameplay (in terms of adventuring, puzzle solving and combat), the cool items I could use and play around with, and the story, which was usually good enough for me to come back to and do multiple playthroughs of those games. At this point, it’s really hard to say if this Zelda will feature those elements, or at least in the same way that the other games have, so there is a little concern, admittedly. I’m still very much looking forward to it though.

Q: What are your favorite Donkey Kong 64 levels?
A: Favorite level is hands down, Frantic Factory. It has the best music, the switching between kongs wasn’t super monotonous like it is in other levels, and it had a lot of diverse areas for a freaking factory. It’s also, love it or hate it, the home of one of the greatest arcade games of all time. And considering this is the level where you unlock the final kong, I like it because it starts to feel like the game is in full swing and you’re ready to experience everything that each world has to offer (since some areas are restricted in the first two levels). I also like Creepy Castle and Angry Aztec as well.

Q: What are your opinions on Amiibos, now that they have been out for awhile and the initial craze has died out a little?
A: From the get-go, I was never super into the Amiibo functionality for games. I was more interested in having them for my collection because they are essentially figurines of my favorite video game characters, and I figured that would be the main draw anyway. I’m glad they aren’t introducing too many at once anymore and they seem to be coming out in small series waves. That way, if it’s not a series you are into, you can ignore it and wait for something else you might be interested in and save your money. I recently bought Waluigi, Daisy and Boo and it was nice being able to walk in Gamestop a few days after they came out and pick them up with no availability issue, so it’s good that they seem to be stocked better. So yeah, not much to say beyond that. I still think they are cool, but I’m not at all surprised that the craze died down.

Q: What future game do you feel nervous about LPing?
A: The Dynasty Warriors series. I love the series so much, but I’m not sure how I want to do the series yet because there is a lot I want to cover with each game, but trying to keep the videos enjoyable without being too repetitive is going to be a huge challenge. A challenge I’m not sure how to approach yet.

Q: Do you prefer to grow a moustache or beard?
A: Beard. I don’t think I look good with just a moustache. Apparently though, according to most of my subscribers, my beard is “legendary,” so another reason to have one I guess.

Q: What is your main motivation for doing Let’s Plays?
A: I do it because people enjoy my videos and I want to provide more content for them. Not to mention it’s also kind of my job now too. Aside from that though, I also do it for myself. I get bored really easily and when I get bored, I waste time doing stuff that doesn’t really serve any sort of purpose. Doing Let’s Plays and Youtube stuff is great because it puts my mind to something I can focus on and it involves video games, my favorite past time and my greatest passion.

Q: How are you when it comes to meeting new people?
A: I try to be as nice, or at least as neutral as possible, when it comes to meeting new faces. I’m not really much of a socialite and I admit I can be a little awkward at times, but I try. Truth be told, I’m actually a very shy person at heart, so whenever I’m trying to start a conversation or initiating a discussion, it takes a lot out of me and inside I’m sweating bullets. This is why I prefer people to take lead sometimes, because it allows me to contribute as much as possible to make up for any silence that I can’t really fill in myself. So really, never be afraid to approach me or talk to me, as I will do anything and everything to be kind and make a good impression, but don’t be surprised or offended if it gets a little quiet.

Q: Does fear of copyright issues stop you from doing any games on your channel?
A: Sometimes, but since I managed to do Simpsons: Hit and Run, Road Rage, and The Simpsons Game without really any issues from Fox, I don’t think there is really anything holding me back. If I had to pick one game that I’m still kind of nervous about, it would probably be Kingdom Hearts, just because of how scary Disney can be sometimes, but I think I’m still going to try and get around to it at some point.

Q: If you had children, what would you like to name them?
A: Since I am technically the third “Robert” in my family, I would like to continue that name because it does feel somewhat special to be the “3rd” in a family line. So for my son, I would probably go for that and maybe use his middle name as the more common name, just to avoid typical same-name issues. For a daughter, I’m very partial to the name “Laura” for some reason.

Q: How tall are you?
A: I haven’t measured my height in a while, but a little under 6 feet. 5’8 or 5’9; or something like that.

Q: Will you do a draw my life or play my life video?
A: Not to the former because I can’t draw to save my life, but I have thought of doing a Play My Life video at some point. Couldn’t tell you when that is going to be though.

Q: Do you want a large family or small family?
A: I’d be more partial to a small family. Having a wife and one or two kids would be just perfect for me. I didn’t grow up with the brother/sister dynamic, so I’d like to see that in action, even if I wouldn’t be the one having the sibling.

Q: Are there any games that are very popular with gamers that you don’t really care for that much?
A: When it comes to first-person shooter games like Halo and Call of Duty, I’ve never really been able to get into them, and it’s not really because of the genre either because I love Goldeneye 007. I also had a really hard time getting into Splatoon as well. I thought it was a cool concept and it was nice seeing Nintendo do something new and very different, but I just couldn’t really get into it that much.

Q: Did you ever want to follow in your parents footsteps in terms of working in the field of Education?
A: That was actually my first major when I started attending college, but I quickly dropped that major after my first year because I really wasn’t too keen about being a teacher for the rest of my life. I have nothing against kids or teenagers, as I’m sure most of my fans are in that age group, but I’d rather provide them with entertainment as opposed to knowledge. It’s a lot less stressful for me, for sure.

Q: What’s the coolest thing you have made as a gift?
A: It was not so much a gift, but more of a gesture. I was talking to a friend of mine once, and she was talking about how she didn’t like to make snowmen because they are eternally stuck in one place before they just melt anyway. So one day, after it had snowed, and since she only lived down the street from me, I made a small snowman, put it on the top of my car, and drove down to her house, calling her and telling her to go outside because “we” are going to wave as we drive by. I later told her that it was so the snowman could finally experience the thrill of not staying in one place. She thought it was a sweet thing to do for her and the snowman.

Q: If you had a genie, what would you wish for?
A: An extra hour every single day. You’d be surprised all that you could accomplish if you had one more hour to work with, and over time, that one extra hour will start to add up. I feel like every hour, minute and second is precious, so you should always make sure you are doing something you enjoy with it.

Q: Do the results of your “Project of the Year” videos impact what you do the following year?
A: It’s a small impact, but it is definitely there. That’s pretty much why I did Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and even Super Paper Mario as early as I did, just because people seemed to really enjoy my Paper Mario RPG. I also got around to Pokemon Gen 2 a lot earlier than planned as well with how popular Pokemon Blue was.

Q: What stores do you like to shop at?
A: Insert the typical gamer answer here; Best Buy and Gamestop. I’ve recently gained an appreciation for retro game stores like Game X-Change.

Q: If the Nintendo Switch fails, do you think Nintendo will pull a Sega and only work on software, not hardware?
A: While I think Nintendo is not exactly on stable ground right now, I still think it has quite a bit of life left in it. I do see this as a big possibility, bigger than I ever thought it would be, but I wouldn’t count them out just yet. The Switch will definitely determine a lot though, for sure.

Q: If you and your future wife ended up having twins, what would be your reaction?
A: It would be very shocking, for sure, going from having not just one kid, but two kids in an instant. It would also be a huge step up in responsibility and work, but I would find a way to make it work.

Mario Party Adance wasn’t exactly the Mario Party game people were looking for when it came to a Mario Party handheld experience. However, when the DS was doing some really nice things with Mario games, attempting the true Mario Party formula with this new hardware was a really great idea becasue Mario Party DS is the definitive Mario Party handheld experience. It’s a little rough around the edges and this game does introduce the tradition of capable Mario Party games not featuring online play, but I think this game is really good and in fact better than some of the console games.

SlimKirby, when will you do Mario Party DS? This was the question I got nonstop for many, many years. Heck, I wish I knew the answer myself, but this was a long road of uncertainy for me. With me giving my old capture card away as a gift to someone who really wanted a DS and no idea of when I would get a new one, this project was in jeopardy. However, once I received my capture card via donations, I knew this had to be one of the first projects I did, so I made sure Mario Party DS was on the agenda. Now I am proudly happy to present Mario Party DS Board Playthroughs!

Mario Kart always seems to be a staple of every Nintendo system, and Mario Kart DS was the answer for Nintendo’s newest (at the time) DS handheld. Although the two screens and touch screen functionality were kind of the main draw for the handheld, Mario Kart DS was a game that didn’t really try to use those features as a crutch for its design. The second screen was used as a map, which was kind of nice, but for the most part, Nintendo just tried to push the same solid racing gameplay that had been present in all the games prior. In addition to that, the DS system also incorporated Nintendo’s newest Wifi Connection which allowed people to finally play this multiplayer beast of a series online, which was a huge draw for the game and system during its initial run. Although it’s my least favorite game of Mario Kart’s modern era, I can’t deny or ignore the impact that this game had on the rest of the series.

I was going back and forth for what game I wanted to cover first now that I had my new 3DS Capture card; Mario Kart DS or Mario Party DS. I knew there was a bigger desire for Mario Party DS, but I felt more comfortable with this as my first project with the new capture card, so I decided to go for it and hold off on Mario Party DS for one final delay (it is coming though). This project will feature several videos of Grand Prix Mode, the Mission Mode, and some other modes I feel like covering as well.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

After the huge success of Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Gamecube, gamers during the Wii generation wondered when Smash was going to get its eventual upgrade. After a glorified E3 trailer, where Metal Gear’s own Solid Snake made his first appearance in the world of Smash, gamers were hyped for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. From the daily Smash Dojo updates, to the first reveal from Japanese content, to the newly established online mode, this game was looking to be a Smash hit!

After kind of stepping away from doing Melee 100%, I knew that there was no way a 100% playthrough of Brawl would be done. However, I did want to make sure that Brawl was still on the agenda at least, because this was definitely a big game for me during the years of 2008-2009. This playthrough will feature a full session of the Subspace Emissary, and I’ll also show off some content from the game itself as well. It’s time to BRAWL!

Mario Kart had never been on handheld before, and with the rising popularity of the Game Boy Advance, a handheld installment was definitely not a shot in the dark. Although it would lack some of the more desirable features of a Mario Kart game, being on the Game Boy Advance and all, it still provided the basics of what makes Mario Kart…well…Mario Kart!

I had enjoyed going through the Mario Kart games in order, but that meant after Mario Kart 64, I would need to start taking on Super Circuit next. Although it is my least favorite game of the entire series, I can’t say too much negative about this game, because it was very limited on what it could accomplish as a Mario Kart game. The Game Boy Advance was cool and all, but it just couldn’t provide the core excellent multiplayer that we’ve come to love from the series.

Super Smash Bros.

Back in the old days, one of gamers’ greatest fantasies was the thought of combining all of Nintendo’s mascot characters and putting them into a game where they could just go wild and fight each other. It was Super Smash Bros., a game developed by Masahiro Sakurai, the developer of Kirby, that finally accomplished this feat and had a tremendous legacy that developed alongside it.

I still had not figured out how to tackle Mario Party DS yet and I was definitely not ready for Mario Kart: Super Circuit either, so I decided to focus on another spin-off game instead. With all the hype surrounding the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4, it seemed like the best time to go back to the Smash Bros. roots and start celebrating the hype in a proper way! I also decided to incorporate “#SmashHype” as a way for my viewers to contribute to the hype of the new games and promote even more discussion.

Mario and his friends sure love to have a good race, and after the success of Super Mario Kart on the SNES, Nintendo was happy to keep the engines going on their next console. Mario Kart 64 brought some new and really innovative tracks and reworked a classic arcade racer into a multiplayer fun-fest. I hope you guys are ready to race, because lakitu is about to wave that checkered flag.

Although Super Mario Kart was my entrance into the Mario Kart series, I feel like this title is what completely sealed myself into loving it. Because of this, how could I not do it? Now if you will excuse me, I think Princess Peach just threw a red shell at me and now I need to knock her off the Wario Stadium jump.
